and by 3 oclock tho immense dock was a mass of fire From the remotest parts of town in response to frequent alarms fire apparatus appa-ratus came thundering down The heat was so great that effective work from land or river was nearly impossible At 3 oclock the steamship Egypt lying at I he deck was towed into the stream all ablaze front stem to stern and through < her rigging Her spars bore the flames to the rigging of numerous other vessels lying anchor Nearly the entire fire department of the city was on hand but many engines oould not be utilized At 330 the spectacle was grand in the extreme ex-treme The ricer front for many hundred hun-dred feet was ablaze All Attempts to saw the property on the Inman dock were abandoned and the work of the firemen was concentrated on the Union line dock adjoining The famous ship of that line Alaska was in the greatest danger Tug boats and ferry boats were making efforts to save her by hauling bar into the trum At9 this morning the Inman dock is i still burning Mcit of the buildings on the pier and their contents are sow consumed con-sumed The lots is roughly estimated at 009000 The steamer Egypt of the fttbnal line at the pier caught fire and was towed out into the stream and the flames extinguished J after she had been greatly damaged The fire department and two fire boats were at work on the flames Of the large covered sheds on deck load of flour in bags was partly burned In a bulkhead at the end of the pier a large quantity of rockery in crates carboys of acid and other merchandise were stored there When the caving of the burning ship was given up as a hopeless task the firemen concentrated their whole energy upon the protection of these goods and sue I ceeded well About sixty longshoremen I were at work on the stream end of tho pier unloading the Egypt when the fire broke out It is feared some of these have been burned This fear has in a great measure been dispelled this morning morn-ing by the statement of the engines who discovered and fought the fire till the firemen came Engineer Smith made a statement describing the manner in which the men escaped He showed they had a narrow one He did everything possible with the help of others to subdue the flames but finding it was useless he gave warning warn-ing to those on the pier to leave He crawled out to the street by placing his hands to the rail track which runs to the end of the pier He believes all got out Insurance policies held by the dock department de-partment on buildings on the pier amount to 60000 These policies wero SEiigaed by the Inman line to the dock department The lease is for ten years and dates from June lat 1831 The pier itself which is the understructure ft is stated is not insured and the damageto it will not amount to much unless the spiles should be destroyed by the fire The cost of the shed on the pier is stated to be between 75000 and 90000 Superintendent Brewster of the Inman dock stated that the total loss will amount to at least 50000 He believed the company was partially insured on tho pier which was built only last year at a cost of 150000 All the books papers and documents are gone The only property on the dock with the exception of the Egypts cargo consisting consist-ing of old ropes sails and lumber Nearly all the cargo of the Egypt had been discharged At a meeting of the board of fire underwriters a committee was appointed to adjust the losses on the pier building machinery and merchandise I merchan-dise The amounts of the Insurance are Pier 6000 machinery 21000 and merchandise 150000 |
