Show A BAD CASE On Tuesday morning we stated that a fellow named Nephi McLain had got into trouble for making away with three guns which be borrowed and which he disposed of in various manners man-ners therein enumerated Since that time developments have taken place which s rongly indicate that if not a dead beat and thief by nature he must be a remarkable instance of the wilful perversity of good qualities Some weeks ago he arrived here from Danver where he left his brother with a broken leg He baa done no wjrk here since bid return and from appearances has made a decidedly good living by the exercise of his wits Ever since his arrival here he tjaa kept roping in some person or another on one plea or another He baa frequently obtained amounts from difldrent parties on the statement state-ment that be wished to send to Denver Den-ver for his brother A few days ago he went to a butcher in the Sixth Ward and agreed to sell him six head of sheep on which sale tbe butcher advanced 6 but baa never Been the sheep He then tcok in a couple of butchers nearer the heart of the town to whom he sold all the sheep be bad left obtaining from one Hand H-and from the other 450 It is also stated that he secured some money in advance on SI sale of wool Two persons are known to have given him U on notes both of which Pe believed to have been forgeie Being a shot he borrowed three guns and disposed of them as has already been stated One day last week he hired a horse from a stable in town under the pretense it is said of going out for others and with this he started south On Friday complaint was made against him before Judge Pyper and tbe warrant placed in the hands of Mr S Scott for service Mr Scott started south aud tracked his man to a number of places in one settlement he had been to a dance and borrowed bor-rowed an overcoat which be made away with and in several places he tried to sell the horse Mr Scott then lost track of him but ran across a coal hauler who knew McLain and was informed that the person he wanted had been seen traveling up Parleys Canon Mr Scott returned to town got a team and that night Saturday started up the cafiou and after a difficult journey through tbe deep snow and extreme cold arrived at Snyderville early on Sunday morning morn-ing where he found McLain arrested him and returLed to the city Mo Lain begged bard and denied all the charges but from indications he has a much larger account to settle with the publio than at first bargained forHe He was released on Monday night and was to have been examined at 2 oclock but additional clOses coming on all the time the hearing was po tponed until 10 oclock this morning morn-ing There seems little doubt that he will be bound over and as little that he will be sent up to the Penitentiary Peni-tentiary upon a trial |
