Show SUNDAY SERVICES In the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon only a small audience assembled the violent snow storm keeping the large congregation that usually assembles away The services ser-vices were opened by the choir singing the hvmn betrinnincr u Behold the mountain of the Lord In latter days shall rise On mountain tops above the hills And draw the wondring eyes Prayer by Elder Elias Morris The choir sang the hymn commencing com-mencing Behold the great Redeemer died oc APOSTLE WrLFonn WOODRUFF addressed the congregation He read the 110th section Doctrine and Covenants concerning what had occurred after the dedication of the Cirtland Temple and the manifes tations there appearing The elder delivered a discourse on the ordi I nances of the gospel and the extent of the different priesthoods the duties powers and privileges of each When a man was conliimed the holy ghost should be conferred upon him and not the gifts of the holy ghost The holy ghost was the testimony ofx the Father and Son to enlighten their minds The gifts of the holy ghost were the power to speak in tongues to cast out devils etc There was a vast difference between the two One might be obtained by a baptism of the spirit but the other could only be received by a baptism of water and of the spirit All the priest hoods had been conferred upon Joseph Smith by those who held them and through Joseph they had been given to others and were held by the church The gospel of Christ was cheapit was obtainable without with-out priceit was not sold The elders traveled many miles and preached the gospel without purse or scrip They conferred the priesthood priest-hood man without cost to him In himself no man had power to administer ad-minister in the ordinances of the gospel but as ministers of God the elders could confer tho priesthood and the gifts that follow an acceptance accep-tance of the gospel The Savior held all tho priesthoods and minis terea in them ijnrisu jieiu a singular singu-lar position in the world his mission mis-sion being to redeem tho world to make reparation for Hie original origi-nal sin and save mankind Jfo other man held so singular a mission His work was not yet ended He would come forth in the first resurrection in the clouds of heaven and hold tho evil one shut up for 1000 years the millenium or period of rest He would set up his throne in Jerusalem and reign for 1000 years during which temples tem-ples would be built and the work of redeeming the dead be performed Then would be all peace and happiness happi-ness the wicked having no influence upon the earth When the work shall be finished at the end of the millenium and the devil be again let loose Michael would gather the hosts of heaven and overcome the devil and cast him and his followers down to the place that has been prepared pre-pared for them Then the earth would be perfect and Christ would present it to the Father One thing that the Lord required of his saints was to build temples and do what they could in the flesh towards redeeming re-deeming the dead and preparing for the coming of the Messiah and the final winding up scene The earth belonged to the Lord and must be prepared for his children to dwell upon when the devil should have no power over it or them This had been ordained before the organization organiza-tion of the world as had also been the kingdom of God The saints were Gods people and he was with them watching over and protecting them against the opposition of mankind The speaker had no fears concerning the Lords kingdom his only fears were that men might lose the spirit and fall away from the truth The work however would go ahead no matter who apostatized apostati-zed and left the church God held the destinies of his people in his hand as lIe did tho destinies of all peoples on earth Individuals could not change what had been decreed Gods kingdom was eternal eter-nal and everlasting and opposition and oppression could not blot it out or stay its progress But the saints must look to themselves and see that they did not fall by the wayside way-side They should be faithful in their duties and hasten the completion comple-tion of the temples in which work for the redemption of the dead could be performed and when they went before the Lord they could make a good report and after this life could claim those of their relatives who had gone before be-fore them without the opportunity receiving the gospel of salvation while in the flesh There was a great work to be done in order to I redeem the dead as there were two in the spirit world to be saved to one on the earth and it required as much to redeem the spirit of one who had gone before as it did to save one who is alive APOSTLE JOHN HENUY SMITII followed Elder Woodruff He said he was probably as much a converted con-verted Latterday Saint as any person per-son on earth For a long time he I had studied tho relitrious organiza I tions T the world with a desire to become acquainted with the faiths whichled religious societies together to-gether He wanted to learn which of the many organizations possessed the truth One book that he had read gave the histories of 60 organizations organ-izations and systems included in which was a history of the establishment estab-lishment of the Church of Jesus I Christ of Latterday Saints He found that each possessed some portion por-tion of the gospel but none had it in its entirety and purity Each built upon one pillar One had one ordinance another claimed another an-other and so on through all the long list But when he read what Joseph Smith had said that all men were responsible responsi-ble for their own sins and be judged by their acts it made a strong impression im-pression npon his mind Finally he had examined the doctrines of his cousins the sons of Joseph Smith He attended their meetings and read their books in order to find if they had the truth Alexander Alex-ander Smith before leaving the city some years ago asked the speaker what he thought of the principles they taught whereupon he the speak 5aid he thought the Josepli ites had tho chaff and the church in Utah the kernel It was a duty that the saints owed to themselves to study tho gospel and understand its principles and doctrines They should labor for their own well being their own good that they could better serve the Lord Elder Smith said that he knew as he knew that he lived that Joseph Smith was called by God to establish this work The testimony had come to him personally and he could not shake off or disregard the evidence He advised the young men to study the gospel and learning of the truth to go forward and obey it The gospel was worth all else it was worth striving for worth living forElder Elder Smith said he and Apostle Lyman were about visit the saints in the southern part of the territory and they would probably be absent until conference time The choir sang the anthem Hearken Unto Me and Councilor D H Wells pronounced the benediction bene-diction |
