Show It is truly a sad bit of news whicL appears in another part of the HEBILD this morning announcing the death of Hon Fernando Wood member of Congress from New York Perhaps his name ia as familiar tithe ti-the people of the republic as that ol any other man aa he was earlier a member cf Congress than any other person now there and from his young manhocd has been prominent prom-inent bsfore tbo country at a statesman and lawmaker off of-f unquestioned talents Mr Wood was born in Philadelphia in 1812 and from tbo humble employment ot a cigar maker he rose to the position of a clerk in a countinghouse and was for some years a shipowner and successful merchant in New York whither his father removed when Fernando Fer-nando waa 8 years of age Iu 1850 he retired tram mercantile life with an ample fortune and ba sinct e almost contiauoaaly occupied official position of prominence and trust For three term from 55 to 62 be wa mayor of New York but before that be bad J served ai representative in Congress from 1S41 to 1843 He wa a member of the 27th 28th 40th 41st 42d 431 44th 45ti and 46tb Congreaieti ausJ last November was reclectsd to the 47th Goncrm |
