Show s CITY COUNUIL Proceedings at the Oily Council cc Tuesday evening August 31st 1880 Mayor Little presiding I A petition was presented by Wm Jennings B T Burton James Sharp and John IL Park representing a committee on behalf of the chancel lor and board of regents of the University Uni-versity of Deseret setting forth that at the last biennial session of the Legislature of this territory the eum of 10000 for each year for 18SO and 1881 was appropriated to the Uni versuy 01 ueeeret lor the purpose ol pUrp1601 purchasing suitable grounds and for erecting buildings thereon for University Univer-sity purposes and that in view of the icceaaary expense in erocJng bnild bnid logs that will meet the requirements of the institution and be of a design worthy of the territory and of the City the mm thus provided would not be adequate for both purposes The petitioners therefore asked the Council t consider the propriety ol donating to the University of Deseret any grounds in possession of the city adapted t the purpose aforemen oned Referred to the committee on public grounds A petition was read signed by James Sbelinerdine representing that be had compiled with the requirements require-ments of the Council in attending t I the scales on Washington Square for the month of August but that on account of the lack of accommodations accommoda-tions for teamsters etc tbe fees be had derived from the business were msufficent remunerate him for tie amount of service performed During the month be had weighed 125 loads and received 15 and as ho was dependent solely upon this resource I for a livine tbe netitinner nrberl the I Council to appropriate sufficient to I I increase his salary to 40 per month until such time ay the improvements I required upon the square for the proper accrmmodation of the public are competed Granted and 2 appropriated to petitioner for August I The committee on streets and alleys to whom was referred the petition Keysrr Moritz who asked permission to conduct water from a certain spring in pipes through the etreeta to their brewery in tbe tenth ward reported that they had investigated investi-gated the subject and recommended tbe grantago Df their petition Report adopted i Alderman Raleigh moved that the I wosden culverts now in use for conveying con-veying watar acroa the streets be replaced re-placed by culverts made of stone or asbestos as fast as too old ones decay and that tho wooden casings to the city fire hydrants be replaced as soon as those now in use become rotten by substantial brick or stone casings and that no more hydrant casings or culverts of wood be allowed to be put in Carried The committee on water works submitted a report upon tbe petitions Samuel Paul and eight others and John Clark aud fourteen others both of wbicn petitions asked an extension of the water mains and represented that the inhabitants in-habitants of the respective localities o eh wiiuicjiu iuu jjauuuuuia teaiueu wuuiu advance to the city tho total sum of 1050 towards the projectthe amount so subscribed to be refunded to the petitions on future water rates Ibe committee recommendedm consideration consider-ation of the amount subscribed and the number of citizens likely to be benefited by these extensions that sufficient pipe therefore be purchased I and laid wtbout unnecessary delay The report was adopted and the superintendent of waterworks instructed in-structed t purchase the pipe and cause it to be laid as recommended Tbe following bills for the month ending August 31st 1880 were pre ecnted and allowed Expense bills of fire department 13935 assistant wat < jrmasters CS5 janitor of City Hall and itsslant jailor t60 medical attendance on city prisoners etc t30i collecting dog tax 20 An appropriation of 1000 was mnde t pay corporation note of May 24th 1SSO given to T W Ellerbecfc for eight months but settled by mutual mu-tual agreement August 27th The committee appointed at the last meeting of the Council to prepare a resolution expressive of the senti monte of tbo Council in relation to the expected visit of President Hayes and patty and tendering them the freedom and hospitality of the city rendered their report accompanied by a preamble and resolution which was reAd to the Council adopted and referred to the committee on enroll ment to be properly enrolled for presentation pres-entation to his excellency the President dentUjon adjournment the Council iztion went into session as a board of equal |
