Show THE NEW YOEK Times in a recent issue gives eome interesting statistics S and particulars concerning railroad building in the United States giving a concise history of the busineea from itajucepliop to the present time In 1830 the number of miles of road in operation this country was only 23 battboincreaEO has bee rapid up to the present time and is still going on In 1831 72 miles were built In 1841 717 miles were built which was the largest annual construction down to 1849 when the number 1309 first reached 1000 Thence S forward until the rebellion thE increase I in-crease annually was between 1000 and 2000 miles except in 1853 2452 1S5G 8647 and 1857 and 1S5S 2647 end 2465 A setback t i was given by 1857 to railroad expan eiont which bad been large for eight i years the miles in operation having grown from 5996 at the end of 1848 to 22016 at the end of 1856 then there was a decline until 1S61 when lor obvious reasons construction dropped to 651 miles and reached 1000 in only one 1863 of the war years With lE65 the process look S a new start In 1869 it reached 4615 miles pissing 1856 hitherto the year of maximum growth 1871 showed 7379 which is still un S cflaaled 1S72 ehowed the beginning of ie l J decline 5878 mile 1873 4107 miles 1875 was the year of I lowest recession Now the develop ment is increasing 4721 miles having been built last year This is the largest since 1872 and is S surpassed only by the three years 187072 The present total in operation opera-tion 86500 is not far short of the loUl in Europe 93800 Tho total in the six middle Etafel156S0is nearly equal to the 17092 in Great Britain and Ireland New England is almost stationary in this respect having built only 30 miles in 1879 i Vermont New Jersey Delaware S Alabama Indian Territory Wyoming Wyo-ming and Washington alone show S literally no progress The sir middle state show 225 miles the ten southern south-ern states built 314 miles the three I Pacific Elates with Arizona and Washington built 321 miles tho western states of course show the bulk ol growth having built 3831 miles This term is quite broad covering fix of the territories with Texas and cuch states as Ohio Indiana Indi-ana and the nearer northwest 111 I S noie and Ohio now well marked over by rails built 130 and 370 miles In 1879 Michigan SO Indiana 138 Missouri 454 Wisconsin 473 Iowa I 523 KnB38676 The bulk of present and probably of future railroad building for a dozen years to come is and will be in those states with Dakota which built only 80 miles in 1879 bu ill perhaps yet lobe im portant in this particular How far railroad building is gOand whether S it will again escape beyond the control con-trol of the brakes of reason and prudence pru-dence nobody can predict But Americans have short memories inS in-S finance as well as in politic and certainly some important conditions easy money scarcity and high price of good securities low interest reviving business and increased earnings earn-ings on existing roads are eminently favorable for the recurrence of a roadroad em |
