Show Cruelty to Animals We have in this city an eslray pound located inthe Fourteenth Four-teenth Ward to which stray animals ani-mals or those treespassing on property prop-erty are driven At present the pound seems to be pretty well filled On Thursday morning a calf which bad been lost for two days was discovered dis-covered in the pound and released on the payment of 150 the amount demanded When released it was so gaunt that one would readily have believed it had finished a successful II fast test in rivalry to Dr Tanner As soon a it got out of the pound the poor brute ran as fast as i could to the first creek and drank almost I viciously i was so thirsty aud at nearly every ditch it came to on the neary way t ever il quarters it stopped and drank until its owner feared it would kill itself Now this calf may have been cartd for properly but its gaunt appearance and the frantic manner in which it ran for water leads to the > chef thatduring the twodaysand two nights in which the unfortunate little beast was kept in the estray pound it had been given neither food nor water I is probable tnai mis opinion opin-ion is extravagant but it is certain that had the calf been given all it needed it would never have been > o gaunt nCr so wild for water The assessment of 150 on the owner to recover possession was perfectly proper as a punishment but was a downright shame as a charge for the oars of the animal if i was collected on that scare There can be no excuse ex-cuse for not giving animals all the water they require and little for not giving them all the food needed as the animal can be held until the expenses ex-penses are paid This may be a tingle tin-gle instance bet where there are so many animals i seems hardly probable proba-ble and whoever is responsible for such treatment is guilty of an act of unmitigated cruelty to animal such as should merit the aivere condemnation condemna-tion of the offender |
