Show LATEST TELEGRAMS A JEWELL The Republican Blaiiscer hog been Writing a Very Foolish Fool-ish Letter New York 30 Barnums committee has telegraphed to many newspapers in California and elsewhere an affidavit signed by Minstrel Joseph Hart with tbo letter Marshal Jewell to Garfield for the purpose of charging Jewell with attempting by bribery to suppress the proofs of the gonuincsi of the Morey letter Jewell being interviewed denounces de-nounces tho affidavit as a tissue of falsehoods false-hoods and says his letter to Garfield wbich perfectly proved in itself was secured se-cured by Hart through arrant trickery for fraudulent purposes or the betrayal of conidenco on the part of Marls attorney attor-ney Judge DiUenhoffor who as an active ac-tive German republican and tbe first fpbaker to take the republican stump in this campaign under the auspices of the national committee enjoyed the fullet confidence of Jewell and associates On Tuesday Dittcnhoffer told Jewell he had been the attorney for Truth newspaper iinco the organization and as such attorney desired de-sired to arrange an interview between Jewel and Hart that Hart and associates associ-ates while professing to the public to behave be-have the Chinese letter wai genuine were in fact convinced to too contrary and that it was a forgery and had proposed I pro-posed to make a retraction of the charge already published Jew ll believing such retraction by the paper one of whose editors bad forged the letter would bo iu most effective denial met Bart as requested re-quested at Dittcnboflera office on 1 uct day afternoon and tated that nothing but an unqualified retraction would be satisfactory Hart endeavored to secure Jewells promise accompanied by a loiter loi-ter to Garfield that this retraction by thf paper would secure tho abandonment of the proceedings against Kenward Philp the alleged forger This Jewell flatly refused but insisted that the forger would be punished to tho full extent ex-tent of the law Hart then offered to publish a retraction on the condition that Dittcnhoffer should hive the benefit of securing the same it any benefit WAS to be derived therefrom by anybody To this Jewel had no objection and at the earnest request of Dittenhoffer and Hart wrote the letter to Garfield and gave it into Dittenhofferi possession How Hart subsequently obtained it for publication Dittenhoffer is expecteed to explain tonight to-night It ii now apparent that Harts purpose in seeking the interview was to secure from Jewell through Dittenbofler a letter l which should compromise both Jewell and Garfield and which he would publish as an offer of a bribe |
