Show I TUESDAY SALT LAKE CITY Oct 30 S Editors Herald On Tuesday I shall vote for the Hon George Q Cannon for delegate to Congress At least that is my present intention Why Because he is the nominee of the people and I am one of the people Because also he is probably as good a man as is available for that position and is known to be thoroughly devoted to the interests of the people The Peoples Peo-ples Party ia overwhelmingly in the majority andit is one of the fundamental funda-mental principles of American gov ernment that the majority and especially es-pecially when that majority ia a great majority should rule S that 1 am emphatically American in upholding be man with the big majority I am not one of those sanguine individuals in-dividuals who tehep or affect to believe be-lieve that their candidate is a perfect man and that the candidate of the opposing party is ncoeuarily the incarnation in-carnation of imperfection and vice Tce There is no perfect man I there is I have not yet become acquainted with the gentleman lhre are spots in the BUD as wall as in the moon and the stars are always twinkling when they are in sight So the best man that ever lived can be picked to piece and he will be quickly and ruthlessly when be becomes a nominee for a high American office But I am not going t do it I I consider a man is a pretty fair man and the beat candidate available as well as the nominee of the people then I go for him not to pull him to pieces but te keep him together and to hold him up on general principles a snort time ago I handful oi I Liberals away ofl thee at Ogden made it appear as one of their great objects t break tho oneness of the Peoples Party I dont think the Liberals will break my oneness to any great extent I do not see why they should If I were the people I dont think tho Liberals would break the peoples oneness very soon I see nothing in the Liberal policy promises or programme to induce me to give up my oneness nor to induce the people t give up their oneness In fact the people could not do it consistently They could not do it politically morally nor religiously I tho democrats had been wise enough in I860 to bo one they would not hay lost the pesi dential chair the south would not have seceded there would have been II no civil war no devastation of the south no national debt of 3000 000 no long pension rolland and no oppressive federal taxes Morally also the eOect of division is weakness and in i struggle certain defeat if the division is i sufficiently extensive Let an army be greatly weakened by divided counsels and i will be almost sure to be badly beaten For i is better to be united over a second rate man or plan than to be divided over a first rate man or plan whether in war or politics or any other buEineee The divided community com-munity is the community that baa part of its people pulling one way and part pulling the other way eo that the whole energy of one part of I the people is wasted force Yea worse than that for not only is the energy of tbo opposition wasted but so much of the energy ol the other I party as is used in overcoming or I neutralizing the energy of the oppoji i I tion is i also wasted The total Joss of wasted energy therefore is great to I I the community and it ia the same ton to-n party when the party is divided Religiously the Peoples Party cannot can-not aQord to give up their oneness because thy are under express divine command to bo one and that to the fullest possible extent Looking at things in this light I am induced to conclude hat the hope of be Liberals Lib-erals to break the oneness of the Peoples Party is a forlorn hope I certainly will be such to an extreme degree i the people prove wise enough to bo true to themselves and their own interests D |
