Show Star Routes Washington SMerrick concluded his address as follows People regardless of party would pay everlasting tribute to the administration that had the high moral courage to punish the corruption of members of its own political household house-hold He demanded fom the jury a verdict of guilty against all tje defendants defend-ants Not a verdict based on tympathio but on facts and evidence and law He demanded this verdict in behalf of the people of the United States whose public treasury these defendants had robbed Be demanded the verdict in vindication of official trusts defendants had disregarded I dis-regarded of the law of the land which they bad spurned with contempt He demanded the verdict in vindication of truth and honor and virtue of the American Ame-rican people which these men had stained and blackened By a verdict of guilty that injury to virtue and truth and honor might be redeemed and that too 3y a jury taken from the people showing show-ing their appreciation ol virtue outraged and honor disregarded Merrick thanked the court and jury for thoirpatient attention atten-tion and took his seat An attempt at applause was checked by the court who asked if both sides were prepared to submit sub-mit their prayers After ohort discussion discus-sion counsel on both sides agreed 10 submit sub-mit their prayers in season to secure their publication in the nest issue of the Re cord and than the qu tion arose as to the time to be allowed for argument At ItJEjersolls suggestion it was decided to limit the argument to Monday time to be equally divided between the prosecu ion and defense The attendence of tbe jury being unnecessary during the argument argu-ment 01 the prayere they were excused until Tuesday and court edjoufned until un-til Torning I |
