Show The Meeting of Losers On Friday morning a call was published in the HERALD for a I meeting of those who sustained losses by the explosion on Thursday morning The meeting assembled In the Deseret National Bank parlors par-lors a full representation of those who suffered being present Hon John Sharp was elected chairman and Col T G Webber secretary The chairman lucidly stated the object of the meeting which was to ascertain who was responsible for the damage that had been done and to consider what action If any Ii should be taken with a view to recovering re-covering the losses from the responsible re-sponsible party or parties The matter was discussed in a very general and full manner and many nice speeches were made Mr Clawson made a statement explaining explain-ing that it was impossible to estimate the amount of powder he had on hand as a very little securely se-curely confined would explode with great violence and do much damage j that he had taken every precaution to make the wagon in which it was confined as fireproof fire-proof as possible and the evidence that he had succeeded was apparent from the tact that the explosion did not take place until long after the flames had surrounded it and not until it was almost red hot that he had stood and warned everybody away and also stated that the powder pow-der company was not responsible for the occurrence Mayor Jennings offered a resolution resolu-tion to the effect that in view of the great loss sustained by MrClawson the meeting pledge itself to take no action that at the present time or ultimately would tend to hold Mr Clawson responsible for the damage done j and this resolution was unanimously unan-imously adopted Mr G F Culmer moved the adoption adop-tion of a resolution that the chairman chair-man appoint a committee of five to draft a letter to the City Council Coun-cil asking that body to pass an ordinance which would effectually protect citizens and their property from the possibility loss by explosives of any kind This resolution was also unanimouslv adopted and G F Calmer H J Grant Charles Smith T G Webber and Spencer Clawson were appointed ap-pointed a committee to draft this petition The meeting then adjourned The committee would be pleased to have such suggestions as those interested in-terested may feel should be embodied em-bodied in the petition sent in to them in order that the whole ground may be covered in the petition peti-tion x |
