Mrs. Keith (Kay) Jensen, individual development commissioner, com-missioner, coordinated plans with Miss Roma Bartholomew, Barth-olomew, third vice president, representing the teachers. THE GOALS for the week included giving the students more exposure to handicapped individuals, building an awareness aware-ness of how we are alike, what kind of person it takes to be a friend to a handicapped child and how to express love and compassion in our association together. In order to accomplish these goals, Mrs. Jensen made arrangements for 13 adults to visit the school on an individual indi-vidual classroom basis, generally. gener-ally. Many of these guests were mothers of handicapped children who had their child with them if possible, or gave their presentation with pic tures where it was not feasible to bring the child. Films and filmstrips were also available for the teachers to use. ONE PRESENTATION, done on a small assembly basis on two separate days, was given by Vicky Hathaway from the Utah State Blind Center Cen-ter in Salt Lake City. She showed the students how to help a blind person walk and to find a chair. She explained the need to talk and not shake your head since they cannot see your head. It was interesting for the students to see things such as a braille edition of "The Reader's Read-er's Digest" in comparison to a regular edition. She also presented pre-sented a film which explained what to do when you meet a blind person. DURING THE week the students stu-dents also learned about deafness, deaf-ness, brain damage, mental retardation, re-tardation, Downes Syndrome, Prader Willi, Cerebral Palsey, speech defects, multiple handicaps hand-icaps and about children who are Hydrocephalic or Microcephalic. Mic-rocephalic. Karen Imhoff, speech therapist at the school, also assisted in the classrooms. clas-srooms. In preparation for the week, Mr. DeLor Maxfield's sixth grade had a poster contest, creating posters to be used to welcome the guests who would be coming to the school. The poster pictured above was just inside the front door as a greeting greet-ing and welcome. GERALDINE Mickelson, chairperson for the parent advisory committee for the handicapped of the Davis County School District was one of the first guests to arrive with her son on Monday morning. morn-ing. She commented: "As we walked into the school, we saw the big poster and that made us feel welcome and loved even before entering a classroom. As we walked down the hall, that feeling continued as more greetings were posted. 1 it's wonderful that the M .arrived that people are" ing and are wanting to stand their handicap f On the surface we rna very different, but inside, is very little difference The teachers had .nd to Mrs. Jensen whicb they would like to h their classes, but as f progressed seve mothers were at much of the day as J be asked by one 'S ano.hertovisi.add J srooms as their pre" were so well accepted" students.
