Show USES OF OIL AND GREASE I I NEEDS OF LUBRICATION 1 WICK SYSTEM OF OILING BY Y BARNEY OLDFIELD Copyright 1918 King Feature Syndicate Inc IN T the course courso of these articles of mine I have hao emphasized once and again tho the vital importance of lubrication in preserving the motor car in its condition condition con con- of efficient operation Every Emery car owner to today today- ay un understands that lubrication lu lubrication lubrication lu- lu is necessary same but a n good Rood many of them just the same make mistakes mist mistakes mis mis- takes in the way WilY thc they apply it not to mention those who make the other t mistake of forgetting it For Instance Just the other da day I 1 I found a ft motorist of ot m my acquaintance i putting grease greate In his transmission I I bawled him out but In this day there I ought not to be bc a car owner In America AmerIca America Amer Amer- ica who would do such a n thing as 8 putting putting put put- ting Krea grease 6 In n tho the g arset Greaso Grease when cold cannot flow to the tho bearings and nd In tho the arset the gears simply cut cuta a L path through h this material and then run dr dry You might Just about as well not pu put t anything In the case caso I a as stuff Bluff It with grease Another thing about grease greaso It has the tho characteristic tic of at picking up dirt grit or nn any other foreign matter nn and this militates against its use In an any part of the mechanism i If this Is true In summer It Is oven moro more so In winter In cold weather grease ue gets packed against tho the side of ot any uny case In which It Is use used so that the parts Intended to be lubricated lubricated lubricated do not ret get a n. bit of ot It A good man many cars still sUll have haxe grease greaso cups for lubricating certain parts Even Eton hero tero this Is s a 1 poor lubricant In gold cold old weather tho the grease crease gets hard bard so 10 that the tho cup cannot be be- turned down and as asa asa asa a result no lubricant gets to the bearings bearIngs bear bear- ings If It I were a car owner 1 would substitute oil cups for fOl all nIl or most of the tho cups cupa on my Oil cups now non como come of or such generous size and antI are arc so o 0 adjusted that they do not have to lie lia he filled tilled frequently which used to be tho the principal argument against them There are oil cups today toda made with a central central central cen cen- wick Ick that ers delivers the oil very ery slowly and he ho cups can be bo filled once In two or three months which Is le all that Is n necessary necessary- Nay May Itch Hc-Itch Ideal Of Ot course we have havo not yet et got to a point point- where one ne no lubricant will win do for tor I all nIl parts of ot the mechanism That is isan isan an Ideal of or tho the future which we e shall achieve o some Borne da day but not yet ot In Inthe Inthe Inthe the transmission m rear axle and differential differ r- r a L heavy oil Is the thES proper lubricant lubricant cant ant to use Other Oilier parts of or tho mechanism mechanism I ism m will get got along best on ordinary cylinder lInder oil Theeo two grades of or oil will pretty well U 1 take e care of 01 an any car as far tar ns ne the lubrication of the mechanism ism goes oes Su Such h places ns as tho the shackle bolts on tho the springs t the tho brake brako cross crOSH shafts and the universal joints which used always al- al ways to be ha cared for fop h bv bY a R. crease CUP are bei being g- g iI fitted d- d ditl with oli oil cups cup and wick It feed that supply gradual feed produced d db b by constricted passage which permit the lubricant to seep leep out slow slowly Here too the wick type oil cup cups aro are being used The wick has tho the great advantage advantage advantage tage of ot being not only efficient but I tr very economical as well The oil tray trav travels els cis up the wick by attraction attraction tion LIon and Is 15 then spread over O the aur- aur u-r- u faco needing lubrication In this way tho the oil spreads Itself over tho the entire surface and It has been said not without without without with with- out reason that wick oiling Is the next best thing to having tho the parts actually actual actual- ly Jy running In oil A further very real advantage Is found In the tho fact that dirt or any foreign matter that may get Into the oil all docs does not find Its Us way Into tho the part being lubricated since attraction tho the oil all mo moves mos s by 11 which chick cannot tl l tako o up tho the heavy sub sub- stance Pr Practice f Tho The usual practice In the lubrication of ot universal un Joints has been to use grease or graphite of some sort The rho reason tor for this Is that It Is s hard to tol l keep oil packed around the Joint be because be- be causo cause of ot the natural tendency to leak out of ot an any ordinary case casc At the same time the universals universal move moe at ater er very high sp speed ed They have havo an arduous function to perform an and the they need tho time very best lubrication that can bo be given them thern Within tho the past Jast year car or so 50 It has been found toun J possible to lubricate tho the sa sale Is with oil fed with wicks It Is la almost Impossible for the Individual owner to make this change In the tho lubrication lu lubrication lu- lu arrangements of ot the tho universals on his car It Is something that will wilt have to bo be worked into the design de desIgn design de- de sign of or future cars and yet et It has proved to so o satisfactory In the crises cn ea hero It St has been tried that no doubt we shall boon oon see It Increasing In lit pop pop- The Tho question of ot Improving lubrication lubrication lubrica lubrica- tion I Is one that engages eng tho the attention of or the tho best engineering brains of ot the automobile Industry There Thoro have boon been I Ingenious attempts to solve soho tho difficulty difficulty that culty by tho the Invention of or bearings hearIngs do not require lubrication Some ome o of those these are aro made mado of ot wood and nd others of at nil of ot metal Into the composition of or them moro more or less Jess graphite has been worked This graphite acts as aH a lubricant lu lubricant lu- lu and where the movement o of tho the self these part Is not too rapid cating bearings serve very well They would certainly be bo better than grease cups that tho the owner HO so frequently frequent never nover bothers to fill or turn down IB is a n. lubrication that paid said When hen I problem that Is engaging the tho attention engineering brains of ot the of 01 the best precisely that 1 I coun country I meant radical shall see very ra believe that tt wo 6 e Improvements In the whole lubricating system of ot the motor car If H there la laone ono one operation in connection with the maintenance of or the cat car that thal needs need tobe tobe to tobe be made mad proof fool It Is the lu What h t has hos boon been done once can be bo done again Barney I am driving a Studebaker 1917 1911 model and have ve generator generator gene gone rotor trouble t constantly I ha havo ha hail had the lire field rewired on un three different oa 00 os- os c also new armatures and I feel fel C el j sure suro that tho the generator was repaired d 0 O K yet et I would only drive the tho caron cat car caton caton on an average of ot three or four days daa when both field and armature would bo bl completely burned out the Insulation Insulation tion would all be oft off the wires Cat Cau you ou please advise I mo where the trouble Is Time The generator gets so awfully hot that one one cannot touch It with the naked hand I have o had the time wires on the tho car tested and the they seem to bo ho O.
