Show I rI fi r- r r z Utah's Representatives at Washington Merit the Confidence of the People R. R REED SMOOT of Utah has risen by his industry integ integ- integrity S SENATOR rity rily And a n high order o of equipment for participation and leadership lp in the activities o of government to a n comm commanding place in the cou councils of the nation Ascending ing rapidly during his Ius second term to a position of leadership in the Senate an honor which he ho has shared with three thle or four senators who have been there for long terms and represent powerful and populous eastern sta states e. e Utah's senior senator should beable be beable e able to T icar with reasonable equanimity that phrase in In tho the Democratic state platform plat which h remarks Wo We 0 pity our senior senator Nor need ho recall the tho fact that sitting in that Democratic state convention as delegates were men who in times when they were engros engrossed ed with their business business' affairs rather rathor than politics and were pleading with a n Republican Senate to save Ve their property from destruction at nt the bands of their Democratic tariff reform friends had returned from Washington Washington Wash Wash- ington and made public tribute to the influence of Senator Smoot in in guiding and nd directing legislation Utah has bas been indeed fortunate in in tho the character of the m mn u n who wh have hae represented her at Washington A sparsely pl populated stat state far from the seat of government libeled and slandered for years it H was necessary that Utah should send to the nations nation's capital men who by their character and ability should give the lie to the states state's traducers by their energy and skill forge to the front in legislative e matters and nud by their wisdom in counsel be invited incited at once into the confidence and amI trust of those who have most to do do with shaping governmental policies The prominence of Senators Smoot and Sutherland in the Senate and of Congressman Howell in the House has been totally out of proportion to Utah's prominence as a state to the breadth of her industries or to the help she is able to give the dominant party when help is needed Utah's three great industries industries and mining must mining must have havo havethe havethe the benefits of a n protective tariff Successful repudiation of the truth of that statement is impossible and consciousness of it by the leaders of the Democratic party in ill this state will prevent any agitation of the tariff question by that party in this commonwealth this fall As JamesH James H IL Moyle former Democratic state chairman said when he returned from Washington whither he went to plead with Utah's congressional delegation to save the wool industry of this state from destruction by his own n party congressman II Senator Smoot is Mr lr Tafts Taft's chief ad adviser adser ser serin in wool tariff legislation Reinforced by the tho influence of Senator Sutherland and by that of Congressman Howell in tho the lower house the delegation from this state has hns stood for the protection of the states state's g industries and has been able this far to resist all aU assaults upon them Its record of bene beneficial legislation secured for Utah needs no roll roll- call Men fen of different character of other personality might have passed through an official tenure of more than twice the period which these men have enjoyed and yet not have reached the enviable positions which they occupy and which are of such benefit to the state which they represent sent The Utah Democracy may dry its tears concerning the senior senator from this state and concerning other members of the delegation They merit and receive the tho confidence of the people and will continue to retain it b because cau e they deserve it P- P a r.- r. n- n Do q I TI HE E
