THIS YEAR Ballet West will offer a five performance schedule; Wednesday through Saturday evening at 8:30 with a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday. All performances will be held at Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah Campus. "Coppelia" will open the 1977-78 Ballet West Season on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and continue con-tinue through Oct. 15. THIS DELIGHTFUL full-length full-length classic masterpiece is a comedy ballet for children of all ages. The charming story centers around a romantic triangle of the heroine, Swanilda, her mischievious sweetheart, Franz and a beautiful life-sized life-sized mechanical doll. "Coppelia" is considered one of the great works in the classic ballet repertoire. Its exciting dances and music have thrilled audiences for over a hundred years. "COPPELIA" HAS many charms, not the least of which is its appropriate union with Leo Delibes' music. The Delibes' score, one of the first symphonic ballet scores, calls out longingly for the ultimate in a full-length ballet. William F. Christensen, artistic ar-tistic director of Ballet West, has redirected this ballet for their fall opening. This particular ballet was first choreographed in America by Mr. Christensen and has been a part of Ballet West's repertoire since its inception. in-ception. IN DECEMBER the famous "Nutcracker" will start its traditional run. Opening Dec. 23 at 8:30 the curtain will go up on the 23rd annual production of William F. Christensen's traditional holiday treat. The holiday season isn't complete without the family attending one of the 14 performances of Clara's wonderful adventure with the magical Nutcracker. "Discovery Season '78" will feature the unusual talents of Bruce Marks, artistic director direc-tor of Ballet West, with the stunning and spectacular world premiere of his newest ballet. This is one season which you won't want to miss. HIS "DON Quixote" performed per-formed last spring sold out early, so we advise that season tickets are purchased now to avoid the possibility of tickets not being available in February. Opening night for "Discovery "Dis-covery Season '78" will be Feb. 8 continuing through Feb. 1L , CLOSING THE season will be two of Ballet West's most dramatic and popular ballets, performed with chorus and the Utah Symphony. "Carmina Burana" choreographed by John Butler is a celebration of life. Carl Orff's music is based on the love poems found in the ancient German monastery, Bendiktbeurri. Carmina is the plural form of "carmin" the Latin word for song. MR. ORFF brought together songs about springtime and love, mocking verses and uproarious drinking songs into in-to a three-part cycle framed by an appeal to destiny. On the same program will be Bruce Marks' "Songs of the Valley." "Songs of the Valley," is dedicated to the pioneers who settled the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. The music is taken from Aaron Copiarf, American THE 1I77-7J Bah Season promi , the most diverse Sr'-seen Sr'-seen in Salt many years. e CU) The advantage in season ticket, peha," "DisrnJ r.
