Show Davis students get boost from NASA's Laser MTRC FARMINGTON Davis District students' future understanding of mathematics and science got a big boost from NASA's Laser MTRC (Mobil Teacher Resource Center) this week. The MTRC, which travels throughout the United States in a 65-foot truck-trailer, spent three days in the Davis District. The NASA unit was equipped with many educational educa-tional resources for Davis County teachers and administrators admin-istrators to review. The two-hour sessions provided them with the opportunity to investigate programs which will greatly enrich their science and mathematics curricul um. Approximately 100 teachers and administrators ordered and duplicated some of the educational materials mate-rials that NASA had in the MTRC unit, to broaden their educational applications. Lamont Jensen, science curriculum director for Davis County Schools, estimated that the three days will give Davis County education approximately $ 100,000 worth of software. The program included practical applications and interesting in-teresting hands-on activities that are designed to entice children into easily understanding science and math. The MTRC's efforts focused on grades three through nine, to create and maintain students' desires to learn math, as well as life, earth and physical sciences. "In my travels, I find that the teachers think the MTRC unit is like a candy store or Christmas, they get so excited about all of the educational aids they can order," said Teresa Hardman, the MTRC facilitator and spokesperson. Teachers and administrators played with computer software which included lesson plans and images of the planets provided by Voyager and Hubble. They viewed several video cassettes that covered such topics as the Universe, the Solar System and the Space Shuttle. A 30 lineal foot display area, called the Discovery Module, was filled with printed educational materials for teachers. Among those were Space Shuttle Glider kits, mission summaries and "Exploring the Universe w ith the H u bb le Te lescope . " Audio cassettes and slide presentation were also available. The extensive list of subjects included "Space Shuttle Propulsion," "The Stars and Galaxies" Galax-ies" and ten energy-related programs. r ( Sr '- 'hJ j f 94 Cv M I JiV r I III i 1 II 1 I 1 .... d.
