Following the discoverv of eight cases of Spanish influenza nt Pueblo the health authorities here tonight ordered all public pub-lic schools, churches, theaters and other amusement places closed and prohibited lodge meetings and other gatherings. Schools and Churches Closed. WILMINGTON-. Del.. Oct. 3. In an effort ef-fort to prevent the spread of Spanish influenza, in-fluenza, the state hoard of health tonight issued an order closing all the schools, churches and motion picture houses in the state and forbidding public gatherings. Since last Saturday 114 deaths from influenza in-fluenza and pneumonia have been officially of-ficially reported. Saloons Ordered Closed. HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 3. Dr. 13. F. Royer, state commissioner of health, tonight to-night issued an order closing every place of public amusement and every saloon in Pennsylvania because of the influenza epidemic. The order is to take effect forthwith. The order also prohibits meet in rs of every description and directs that funerals funer-als be private. Failure to obey the order will be considered a misdemeanor. The corn m iisioner of health arranged with Adjutant General Bea ry to obtain tile use of armories for hospitals should it become necessary and also for the shipment ship-ment of tentage from the state arsenal. Reports 4000 Cases. NEW YORK. Oct. 3. Health Commissioner Commis-sioner Copeland in a statement made public tonight said only 4000 cases of Spanish influenza have developed in Greater New York. About 10 per cent of the Victims have developed pneumonia, statistics show, and of these about 50 per cent have died. Widespread tests to determine the e.f-perlod e.f-perlod IS? persons have died from pneu-which pneu-which was announced this week, will begin be-gin tomorrow, Mr. Copeland said. He declared that the vaccine had already proved successful in some cases. Tomorrow, he said, enough of it will be available to treat 15.000 persons. The serum will be used only in camps and residences where imminent danger of the disease exists, and only until the subjects sub-jects have been immunized with more permanent vaccine, which is expected to produce immunity for several months. Nurses Are Called. SAN FRANCISCO. Oct. 3. A call to duty for home defense nurses in California, Califor-nia, Nevada and Arizona was issued here today by the Pacific division of the. American Amer-ican Red Cross as a precautionary measure meas-ure against any spread of Spanish influenza in-fluenza into these states. The home defense de-fense nurses are those whose date of availability for call into overseas service ser-vice will come after December 1. Forty-five deaths, twenty of which were caused by pneumonia pneu-monia and twenty-five by influenza, were reported to the health department today. Eighty new cases of pneumonia, and 370 cases of influenza were reported. , Since September if, when the first case of Influenza was reported, until today, reports re-ports of 1579 persons suffering from the disease have been received. One hundred and two deaths were reported since that time from the same disease. In the same period 1S7 persans have died from pneumonia. |
