Tile special Committee appointed to exaul lie ailU Ueport on Selling Machine, at the Xortn Carolina State Fair, held at llalclgh last week awarded a iold .Medal to the Florence Sewing Machine for the ea.e and qulelucol'lls movement a, perfection and large variety of work, and It valuable new features, making ma-king It the most valuable Sewing Machine for family use. Parties com e mplat 1 ng the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machines are requested re-quested to read t he fol towing from the ew York "Tribune" of Oct. lUlb, lblllt SKWIXU 3iaciiim:s. We have recently had occasion to make soiue iijijuirie- into the jrtrrcp ot iuiiTove-lucLU iuiiTove-lucLU in the uieoiianirin of pevriDg machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that the central idea in the first ijvemion tke shuttle still holds is place, though many attempts have been made to supercede it. Tue shuttle, in combination with the needle, is still lue n.eans used to torm the stiicn, in the leadir.g niacin Lit.', and we find that the gn-wth ol trade is chiefly with the shuttle-using shuttle-using machines. 'ihe improvements that are taking firm hold in practical use are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in cjimecuon with the shuttle, either in tho detail of the shuttle itself, or in other part of tho uatjhine connected with it, to cause ttie whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its use. .Many important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florence" ma-ehido; ma-ehido; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the "Florence" before making ma-king a choice, ihe points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in maKing the "Florenee," thereby securing the best material steel, for instance, where others use cast-irun ). and the i-nest finish of important parts (the shuttle, for example, being rigiuly rejected if it varies from the standard l-2,UJth of an inch !) It is constructed con-structed on thesiniplest scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, and links wuich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccountable unaccount-able freaks. The "Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is so readily learned, that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. The lockstitch, lock-stitch, as made by the "Florence" is very regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, and is drawn into the tabrio evenly, gradually, grad-ually, exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; consequently, con-sequently, veiy fine tnreads and light fabrics can be used. Besides this, tho " Florence" Un ail but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitcher a double lock, a single knot and a double knot whih are stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other machine, ma-chine, ihe "Florence" is the only machine that his a reversioie .eed, whereby the direction di-rection of the sewing can be instantly changed without stopping the work, thus enabling the operator to quilt or embroider with unusual lacility, to sew backwards and easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to fasten ena in the quickest and strongest way. It id the only machine that has a self- adjusting ehuuie-tareau tension, wnich 1 works so perfectly that the operator can run across the heaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme-" , diate succession without breaking the thread i and without changing the needle, stitch or tension. Ihe "Florence" draws the thread into the cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left alter the stitch with an accurate promptness that prevents ail snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows tne operator to sew backward, or to run oifthe cloth and on again, with perfect impunity., It has an improved elastic hemmer, exclu- ' sively its own, which is managed with ease, and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not oniy makes a perfect gather and sews it to a band at one operation, but it hems, and binds, and foils, and quills, and cords, aaa tucas, and gathers, ad braid without basaiifT. Price $...V. ir AINKS' t a t J -V T I 8 u ' Is a book well known to every ju.-tioo cf the j peace, practicing lawyer and public officer i in Illinois and the Northwestern States and Territories, as the most useful and complete work of the kind exiam. It has lately been revised by the author, and materially improved by the addition of much imiortant matter. g'lY iug all the late laws and published decisions down to ISod This book has, up to the present time, reached reach-ed a larger sale than any other work of the kind in this country. This fact may be mentioned men-tioned as evidence of its superior merit. Its excellence consists both in the mattor em braced, and the arrangement or classification classifica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in the work it is intended to give all the statute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, police magistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will require in discharging their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary cases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely supersede the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. The arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and cf the essence of its value, presenting present-ing each Eubject in its order and in it proper relation with othors. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented tho law with a clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders tho whole alike plain to tho common understanding as to tho more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justice of the peace, police magistrate, constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instructions instruc-tions in regard to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all the statute law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated cises applicable in ordinary practice. The businessman will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transaction transac-tion of business. Students of tho law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, clearly stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of jurisprudence. jurispru-dence. The .following brief reference to the contents con-tents ol this work will afford iu some.degree an idea of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or ap propriate subdivisions, as follows : Pakt 1.
