'The Farmers Market website describes the marketplace as: A neighborhood market for local yM 4 : F - I growers, ranchers, and crafts people. Jack Wilbur, local urban gardener and owner of 3 Squares Produce wants to urge students at Westminster to come and support the Farmers Market for three reasons: First, the product is fresh and better-tastin- g. Wilbur said. Some farmers "mil use an heirloom seed, which means the crop has not been genetically modified, resulting in tastier fruits and vegetables. Second, you can talk to the person who grew it, so you know what they put on it (pesticides), and what they did not. You can ask if they were organically grown. And finally, Wilbur wanted to make sure that patrons knew the Farmers Market is more of a party atmosphere. You can get something to eat, and have a nice evening out. He even made reference to the live-bawho came to the market, playing for tips. Local business owner Debora Hammond, owner of Cheese Bread Mania, began to sell her Brazilian cheese bread, a recipe that had been passed down for generations in her family after she quit her job when the economy crashed. She felt she had no potential to grow in the company she was working for. Now, her local, gluten-fre- e product can be found at the Harmons Brickyard location in the freezer section. The Farmers Market was a way to promote her new product, and provide for her family as a single mom. Being a single mom I did not know where to go. My mothers friend started a similar business in Australia and I decided to try it out here in the states. I was just tired of making money for everyone else. Hammond said. Because Hammond has a new business, she is still working very hard to get her business to grown and one day, become profitable. Its painful to run your own business Hammond commented. But I am happy and its a lot of fun. You can find more than fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market. Other vendors brought items that ranged from handcrafted soaps to crafts and jewelry. A local favorite is Happy Monkey Hummus, which nearly sold out after only four hours on the market. . Cory Dumont, from Kenyon Organics goes to great lengths to avoid using pesticides on his heirloom tomatoes. One of Dumonts tactics is using rolled newspapers that trap and confuse earwigs, preventing them from eating his plants. However, dont be tricked. Not all of the farmers at the market grow their produce organically so be sure and ask the seller how their produce was grown. . If you want to find a new place to hang out on Friday nights, check out the Sugarhouse Farmers Market. With fresh foods, local produce - and crafts, it is sure to begin an eventful Friday evening. Plus, you will be helping local business owners like Deborah Hammond and many more, whose commitment and values are to bring the and grown produce freshest, best tasting, quality-maand products. nd V Small boy dancing to the live-ba- nd Owner of Cheese Bread Mania, Debora Hammond with her daughter Adrianna at the farmers market S V " S L r ; ft live-ban- ds, de - Vegtables UoubftMw.
