Show The Forum-- 8 Waste September 11, 2001 in West Desert Beloved Professor Remembered Jason McDonald Just imagine dancing at one of Salt Lake Citys hippest, trendiest, new hot spots, the House of Blues scheduled to be moving into the Rio Grande train station in late January when a train loaded with low level nuclear waste, from outside of Utah, rumbles past, making its daily trip to Envirocare to be buried under the West Desert indefinitely. Thankfully this scenario wont happen within the next year, because of Envirocares decision in July to delay its plans to bring low level nuclear waste to Utah. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Envirocare has backed off because of a discussion they had with Gov. Leavitt. The Governors office expressed concern that granting approval for Envirocare to bring in additional radioactive waste could undermine his efforts to prevent the Skull Valley Band of the Goshute tribe from building a storage site for spent fuel from nuclear power plants across the . nation. Presently, it is known that Leavitt opposes the Goshute proposal, however after making many decisions that have negatively affected Utahns health and wild lands, yet filled the pockets of contractors and already wealthy land owners, it is unknown whether he will have the gumption to refuse all nuclear wastes proposals and not just proposals that he and the state can make money on. There are many Utahns around the state that are concerned about this problem and in an effort to help educate the rest of the public they are holding a gathering sponsored by Ohngo Gaudadeh Devia Awareness. The Nuclear Free Great Basin Gathering will take place October 6 and 7. The two-da- y event will bring together hundreds of citizens concerned about nuclear contamination. There will be educational workshops on nuclear wastes and alternatives to nuclear energy and nuclear wastes dumping. The event will also feature nuclear issues on Native lands, including the details of what is happening with the Goshutes and Private Fuel Storage. The sponsoring groups are asking fur a $25 dollar donation for people interested in camping. The money will help pay for food, portapotties, and logistics. People attending just for the day, are asked to donate $10. To any and all in the Westminster Community interested in attending there might be a carpool van going to the event.
