Show News Community International Corner Many thanks to Eccles Foundation Cara by Cuhoon The George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation has made another generous contribution to the Salt Lake City community. A supporter of Westminster College, the Eccles donations came this time in the form of an audience development grant for the Utah Symphony, according to an announcement by the orchestras executive director, Paul R. Chummer. The Eccles foundation also supports the University of Utah. Aside from the importance of supporting the liberal arts, the foundation believes it is necessary to contribute to the fine and performing arts in the state. They support Ballet West as well as the Symphony. The directors of the foundation regard the fine and performing arts as one of Utahs most precious possessions, said Foundation Chairman David P. Gardner, "and it is essential that they remain vital and continue to contribute to the culture and quality of life for the people of Utah. Internationally known banker George Stoddard Eccles started the foundation with his wife Dolores Dore Eccles in 1959; they have been supporters of Westminster since that time, acording to Edward Sweeny, director of development at the college. Mr. Eccles died in 1982. Ilis will stipulates that Mrs. Eccles i nherit one fourth of the estate, with the bulk of the remainder going to the foundation, . according to Sweeny. Westminster College receives approximately a quarter of a million dollars per yeahi nun restricted funds and about 7.5 million dollars a year frt restricted funds from the foundation. Unrestricted funds can be spent in any way the college sees fit, according to Sweeny; restricted funds are limited to scholarships. These contributions are critical to the success of Westminster, said Sweeny. Utah Symphony is also highly appreciative of the Eccles Foundations support, according to Chummers. The grant they recently received will initiate programs such as allowing college and university students in the state to receive discount symphony tickets. These are programs we have wanted to initiate for some time and we apreciate the vision of Foundation, said Chummers. We anticipate these programs will have great success and become a permanent part of our operations. This grant is especially timely in light of our $969,000 deficit for 1986-8he said. the-Eccle- 4 (finny Gale' s m Utah Jazz President and General Manager Dave Chccketts last week announced a multir trade in which the Jazz team, acquired center Darryl Dawkins from New Jersey and center Mel Turpin from Cleveland while sending center Kent Benson and guard Del Curry to Cleveland. Checketts said that in Darryl Dawkins, the Jazz is getting a guy who badly wants to make a strong comeback. Ilis contract is based on how well he does, and that hes an entertaining guy. Mel Turpin, who was the starting center for Cleveland two years ago, is a good shooter, an excellent outside shooter for a big man, .Checketts said. At 611 and 260 pounds, Turpin is indeed a force ,to be reckoned with. Nicknamed the Big Dipper, Turpin averaged 6.1 points per game in the 20 season, and scored a season-hig- h L.A. the on December Lakers points against , 16. During that season, he scored in double digits 18 times. Dawkins, after receiving a back injury in the seventh game of the season and undergoing two back operations in less than a year, devoted the summer to therapy and strengthening his back. Even so, he finished last season with an average of 9.5 points per game. During his professional career, he ranks in two of the NBA e leaders categories. lie is third on the highest field goal percentage list with a .573 average, and is e the Nets leader in field goal percentage with a career .601 mark. lie is one of just three players to come directly out of high school to play in the pros. Over 19,000 tickets have already been sold, and Jazz officials n have asked the NBA for the leagues attendance record, which is just under 20,000 for a single game or single date. Layden said that from time to time, he would like to play a front line of Karl Malone at small forward with Mark Eaton and either Darryl Dawkins or Mel Turpin at powerfor-waror a front line of Malone, Dawkins and Turpin. Two of the three combos would total more than 800 pounds. For those interested in purchasing Jazz tickets on a group basis, a discount of $2 on .$10 and $15 tickets is being offered. I just couldnt imagine life without a Mailman. Last year, Malone ranked twentieth in NBA scoring at 21.7 points per game, and just missed being in the NBAs .Top 10 rebounders at 10.4. He was the'Jaizz top playoff scorer at 20.0 and number 2 rebounder at 9.6. He was the only Jazz player to start all 82 games. With these respectable averages, and at 69, 250 pounds, its no wonder the Mailman really delivers.
