Beginning Lake fall Salt quarter, offer will an College Community associate in applied science degree in electronicsavionics. "Avionics is a relatively new word which is a contraction of aircraft electronics," explained Prof. John Tiiplett, who is in charge of the new course. A recent survey of major airlines by 'SLCC indicated the aviation mechanics jobs will grow at a rate of 5,000 jobs per year through the 1990s. The SLCC course is designed to interface with the Aviation Maintenance program presently taught at the college which provides students with an A&P certificate. Students may choose to enter either the A&P program or the avionics training first. "Modern commercial and aircraft are becoming military said increasingly electronic," Triplett. "The present generation of airline and fighter aircraft are referred to as digital aircraft because most signal and control systems have been replaced by digital, or computer data links. Even traditional flight control systems have been replaced by wires and computers. A pilot now flies a computer, and the computer flies the airplane," he explained. "This increasing sophistication of modem aircraft mandates that maintenance personnel have more education, especially in avionics." greatest need in the aviation maintenance field is for airframe and powerplant mechanics (A&P) with additional training in electronics. The largest unmet need at Delta Airlines is for avionics mechanics who have an A&P license, to James Diffley, according manager of maintenance administration for Delta. Salt Lake is one of Deltas major hubs and ground was recently broken for a new $21 million Delta Airlines maintenance and service facility at the Salt Lake Airport. "The Magna community must work together," Retford read, "otherwise it will drain its resources and cloud the issues. It is the desire of the county that the entire Magna Community and all its merchants and business people are successful and realize their full economic potential." "Arbor Park and Main Street are not in competition," Retford went on, "their future lies in different segments of the market. If they were to compete with each other, they would only succeed in one or both being economically destroyed. "On the other hand, if Magna Main Street were to develop as a regional destination point, it could only help Arbor Park commercial and office development," he continued, "And if the commercial and office development at Arbor Park were successful, it could do nothing, in the long run, but help the Magna Main Street Project Area." In a report to the council concerning a proposed mining museum, Warren Neusmeyer said that he had spoken to Wally Jensen, former superintendent of the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott, who has contacted people to assist on a board. He said Jensen would meet with the Magna Community Council within the next week to report on. progress. A master plan for Magna moved a step closer to week when last reality representatives of the Magna Community Council met with county planning and zoning officials to redraft some of the language included in the rough draft of the document, as well as to correct inaccuracies contained in the historical data. According to Laura McDermaid, council president, at issue was language that made negative referrences to the area being "blighted and deteriorated." Mike Retford added that the language used in the Redevelopment Report is much more upbeat and positive. Criticism was also leveled at material in the rough draft stating that Magna had been a "company town", and correction of dates made concerning construction of area schools. also Inaccuracies existed Green the Pleasant concerning Cemetery, as well as dates when the Utah Copper Concentrators came into being. The dates concerning formation of the Sewer and Water Magna and District, Improvement subsequent bonding for water and unproved sewage disposal were also incorrect. McDermaid went on to say that LaRee Pehrson and Art Flangas had coined the idea that the Arbor Park area and the historical part of town are like two ends of a dumbell that can complement each other rather |
