Letters Magna Council To the editor, In Magna, history is repeating itself. The Magna Community Council is again being challenged, after surviving not only one but two other attempts to discredit and restructure this body. The latest threat is composed of g five different factions that are single Number one is the group who were disgruntled about not being able to raise., the ; mill levy to finance a neighborhood park that would benefit only a few and would have placed an additional burden on the whole community. The second group is made up of those who are seeking a quick fix on the tailings problem, not understanding that the mining industry and tailings are synonymous, and they also failed to take into consideration the fact that Kennecott has been the life blood of the state for 50 years and of Magna for more than 70 support their intention to close down KCC and cover the tailings pond. Instead, the council chose to support the position of the governor and his state task force, which has now established a working plan to control the dust problem. This action contributed greatly to keeping the mining industry healthy and it supported the economic goals of the governor. self-servin- issue-oriente- d. years. The grudge they hold against the council is that the council did not Misstatements Dear editor: I am constrained to respond to misstatements of fact given by a letter from LaRee Pehrson recently published in your July 9 edition. Ms. Pehrson's job was eliminated as a cost savings actions, together with numerous other actions taken by the Board of Trustees to hold the line on costs. Ms. Pehrson stated her net wage, but did not state her full benefits from the District. The monthly benefit she obtained was in excess of $280 per month, including cost of medical insurance. Ms. Pehrson also cites the hiring of two part-tim- e employees as inconsistent with the cost savings measures taken by the board. In fact, the Board hired Mr. Chuck Burt in February to work in the new sewer plant in order to cut down on overtime hours of full time employees. As a highly qualified mechanic, his hiring has saved the District overtime that would have otherwise been required and the District pays no other employee benefits to him by virtue of his part-tim- e status. Mr. Chad White was basis in April hired on a part-tim- e and will leave the District in October of this year. The most serious misstatement made by Ms. Pehson's letter is her statement that the District spent thousands of dollars furnishing and redecorating the District's new location in the Chick Paris insurance building. Chick Paris does not own the building in which the District is located, although his business is located in the same building. No money has been spent by the District either furnishing or redecorating the Number three is the library issue. results of a public hearing revealed the need for a free standing library, which initiated a professional study for the best location. As many as seven sites were included In the survey, resulting in two outstanding sites being chosen that fit all the criteria. The The owners of both sites were approached for a donation and the council secured 2.8 acres of prime ground located near five of the seven area schools, in a safe location free of traffic hazards and that is accessible to all people, including the disadvantaged, the affluent, the senior citizens, and which has been formal offices occupied by Chick Paris Insurance. The owners of the building located at 2711 South 8600 West, are two individuals unrelated to any member of the Board of Trustees. It was reckless for Ms. Pehrson to have made any suggestion that a member of the Board of Trustees was personally benefited by the District's temporary relocation. Any such implication is totally false. Chick Paris Chairman Board of Trustees Magna Water Co. Thank You ly accepted by the Salt Lake County Library System Foundation on its merits. ft The fourth component in this complex drama is comprised of the people who did not know how to work as a team and had no loyalty to the organization to which they belonged. Because of their predjudicial actions against the council, by seeking to destroy it from within, they were expelled from the organization by a vote of 11-And last, but by no means least, all four of the factions are being led by the same Pied Piper of Magna who led another elected community council into oblivion in the late 1980s and who fancies himself the Messiah in all aspects of community life here. Contrary to the criticism that has been leveled against the council regarding the structure of the council, eligibility of the council members to represent the community, as well as the council not conforming to the county ordinance, the answers can be found in the Amend- - Continued on page Close Enough To Care A db 7 262-668- 2 Just remember, Arlo James, a good man on the job as State Representative and Kearns Town Council member.
