Show 8B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, January 8, 1987 Last Year's Cheers And Jeers For Parents - Consistency Is A Must The Good And The Bad Of 1986 That shows courage from a beleagured, dedicated Board of Education. for one last look at the unlamented passage of 19S6 -with some cheers and jeers. .Now Cheers to those who had the courage when something was wrong to do their fair share to right it - to the Corizon Aquinos, Joe Paternos and Mother Teresas of the world. -- Jeers to NBC and the NFL who force feeds regional games to an audience such as those of us in the Salt Lake area who perhaps don't live and die by the fate of the Denver Broncos, especially when a more meaningful game might be shown. Cheers to Larry H. Miller for his willingness to make his investment in the Utah Jazz more than a tax writeoff - for his efforts to turn the franchise into a winner. More cheers to Granite School d district for finally seeing that schools may be a legitimate Cheers to the patrons who realize answer to a numbers problem that isn't going to go away. And to Jordan that while these answers arent School District, which not only took ideal, they appear to be working. Jeers to the LDS Church for its that challenge a full year ago, but bit the bullet and is busing some of its closure of Promised Valley students to empty classrooms in Playhouse - after more than 7,000 season tickets had been purchased Granite schools. -- year-roun- for an upcoming season. Jeers to those athletes who were banned from bowl games for use of drugs that had been suspect for many years and who had the audacity to complain that somehow life was unfair to them. Cheers to their coaches who at least gave lip service to the effort to perhaps save the lives of young men down the road. Jeers to the likes of Jim McMahon for the example they are setting for Americas youth - make that the world's young people. And a huge jeer to Salt Lake County government. To those who would put splendid furnishings, expensive art work in their new building and their own gains ahead of law enforcement and fire protection and who would leave a building like the Capitol Theatre unprotected. Leaders who will not take the bull by the horns and admit there are some answers for said building that have not even been explored. Cheers to Senator Bill Barton for bringing to the surface an unpopular issue that is related to fair taxation for us all. A mixed cheer and a jeer to Congress for making some strides - tax reform, but for leaving too many loopholes for those who have had the best of the system all along. Cheers to Utahns who went to the polls this fall showing that their votes could not be bought by slick campaigns and great expenditures. Jeers to those who tried to buy our votes. Cheers to those Special Olympians who touched our lives last winter. And to their parents and the sponsors of the events. Jeers to attorney General David Wilkinson for his misguided pursuit of overturning the courts decision on the Cable TV Decency Act. Its throwing good money after bad and the state has done enough of that by choosing to pump the Great Salt Lake. Cheers to the late Avard Fairbanks, not only for the legacy he leaves behind, but for his unceasing desire to share his talent with school children. And finally, cheers to you for making it through another year, hopegul-l- y with some gains over the previous year. May this new one bring us all more cheers and fewer jeers. school counselor, or principal. Your by Betty Condie in I f, 1 President In disciplining children, parents need to be consistent in what they say and do. It is confusing and unfair to tell children they cant have dessert because they didnt eat their vegetables, then give them dessert anyway to stop their fussing. It is also inconsistent to demand with equal force that a child stop or playing with matches and that he she stop picking on a younger brother or sister. Consistency will determine the success of whatever discipline methods you use. Each time you ask your children to do something, you also have a job. Your job is to follow through. Remember, too, that your children may have been misbehaving for some time. If this is the case, when you start to correct them, they may not think you mean it. They will learn that you mean business when you continue to follow your program consistently. If you see your children slipping into behaviors you cannot correct by yourself, it may be time to seek outside assistance your childs teacher, clergy, or a child or adolescent psychologist may be able to suggest some helpful ideas and strategies. Being consistent and following to through requires a commitment inthat involves an vestment of time and a willingness to work hard. it means getting Sometimes to face a childs having angry, anger, having to stand firm in the face of criticism from grandparents, neighbors, etc. And remember, insisting that a child behave is just one part of the complex process of child-rearin- g child-rearin- THIS WEEKS PUZZLE ANSWER TV QD 0) 4:30 B B Contact Ghostbusters (MO.TU.WE.TH) (FR) News O TBA 12:30 NBC Nightly News aO morning ,. .'
