The program has been in existence about 10 years and we try to improve it each year to meet the needs of the population, explained director Jeri DeGraftenreed. Several programs are available to assist economically disadvantaged youth, she noted. Participatnts can attend classes at the University of Utah or at Utah Technical College, earning eight credit hours, with assistance available toward books and tuition, along with part-tim- e employment. Remedial programs are available at the Skills Center. There is a work experience program in which those participating work 32 hours weekly and there are also two programs involving the private sector, she added. The program is funded by the Job Training Partnership Act. b Participants in the OJT Training) program may earn $4 to $5 an hour while trying out various jobs, offering an opportunity to get a variety of work experience and background. LuAnn C. Poulsen has been named dean of the Salt Lake Skills Center, a division of Utah Technical College at Salt Lake. Vice President for Instruction Dr. Max S. Lowe made the announcement after a statewide search to succeed Pat Latham, who has moved to the east coast. Mrs. Poulsen has been associated with Utah Tech and the Skills Center since 1977, originally as a clerical in; structor and more recently as a division chairperson. In earlier years she worked for Sperry and for Hercules. She has also taught at Kearns high. The Salt Lake Skills Center, located in an old building at 4th South and 6th East, plans to move to the Riverside campus of Utah Tech about the turn of the year. That campus is being remodeled for adult use from the former Jordan junior high school building.
