Karen has been quilting since 1976, and enjoys every minute of it. "Right now our group is working on sampler quilts, she enthuses. "We're all using the same pattern, but we use our own fabrics and colors and make our quilt the size we want. It is fun to see how different each one turns out," she tells. ( Miss White is a "lap quilter as opposed to a "frame quilter and there is quite a difference, she notes. "Even a large quilt is easier, and much more comfortable, to do on your lap than on frames," she declares. With a frame you are tied to one spot and an entire room is filled, but when you quilt on your lap you can take your work anywhere. "I quilt when I'm traveling, or waiting in the doctors office - just about anywhere I go, she laughs. There are many advantages to lap quilting Miss White tells us. "No more cricks in your back and neck, no more sore arms from stretching, and its entirely portable and very comfortable. "Quilting is relaxing, creative; I can express myself. I tried other forms of handwork, needlework and so on, but quilting is best for me. I actually discovered I was an artist but never knew it till I began to quilt, she tells. She is presently working on a 64 square applique, and loving it. I spend an entire day on my hands and knees doing the basting as I prepare a big quilt or hanging, but it is worth the initial effort so I am able to sit in comfort with it on my lap rather than bending over a frame all day. It takes so much less room, and K50H3B 0GS7 .iiifri W.U 1 11 SEERSUCKERS 3D 033 5SEE52ET The technique of lap quilting is demonstrated does aw'ay with the constant putting up and taking down of the quilt frames, she adds. I can understand why the pioneer women loved to quilt. Their work created something beautiful, and it was cherished, often handed down through generations. Too many people today are in a big hurry and dont give their quilts the tender loving care that it takes to make a real heirloom beauty, comments Miss White. The joy of owning a hand-mad- e quilt (I dont even consider machine quilting) comes from creating a thing of beauty all by yourself, she assures us. The Southridge Quilters have been in existence for about a year. Groups of quilters have formed in other areas such as Rose Park, the Avenues and Holladay. As they grow they splinter off and form smaller new groups. I felt the need for a group closer to home, and decided the only way to have it was to start it, she laughs, and I did. The group meets twice monthly in the Kearns library. Some members quilts become the modern day equivalent of yesterday's samplers. Different techniques of 'piecing' as well as various patterns and stitches of quilting are all used in the single 'masterpiece' that Doll . The sampler quilts now in process are being pieced entirely by hand which gives a much softer look than machine piecing, this busy lady 2D mm tells. took lessons from Sandi Fox, comes from California to demonstrate and has had many shows in Salt Lake, she said. Miss White is a member of the Utah Qu'lt Guild, which promotes quilting as an art, arranges regional meetings, with displays, lectures, classes and shows, and distributes a quarterly newsletter. The annual meeting of the Guild will be held in Salt Lake this September and will feature a big quilt show. The March meetings of the Southridge group will be held on March 4 and 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Kearns library. We would welcome anyone interested to join us. Our meetings are fun and interesting, it is stimulating to meet others, share ideas, and work together on our individual projects. I who ifTPnfft BEET Do.
