Show It's A Nightmare TryingTo Keep Track Of Evening Soaps J So how the heck did he get into the shower? And does anyone really care? I guess someone must, since there has been considerable speculation about how the latest DaMascliffhanger will be resolved. Everyone and their mothers uncle seems to have an opinion. Some of them pretty far out. F or all you smart people who dont bother to get hooked on soaps, daytime or prime time, Dallas ended last season with the supposedly dead Bobby Ewing standing in Pamela Barnes Ewing Graisons shower. The morning after her wedding to someone else, of course. Of all the innumerable theories, the one Ive heard that manages to make some sense is that last season was all a bad dream and Bobby never really died. Ill add my amen to the theory that last season was a bad dream. i wssi Nightmare might be reasonable term. Perish the thought. What would we do on Friday night without Dallas and Falcon Crest to kick around? I have to confess that more than anything, those two soapies were responsible for my purchasing a VCR. Id like to think I have good taste and that there is some endearing quality about one or the other that causes me to tune in religiously every week. But Id be lying if I tried to convince you that either one has anything going for it. Outside of a couple of million viewers who are just like me. Michele Bartmess . Hotel and a movie ( and we all know how wonderful those are). In the meantime, Dallas fell in the ratings and Duffy no doubt found that he missed the big bucks he was paid per episode to play the foil for the generally evil J.R. Which points up the pure folly of killing off a character. Maybe we Dallas fans wont really care. After all, the whole series has been pretty implausible from the beginning. And it seems to get worse every year. I suppose its even possible that the series has run its course. 4 Vicki, the daughter of Chase and Maggie, went off to live in New York or somewhere. And was never mentioned again. Not when brother Cole married, became a widower and remarried. Or when her father was shot and clung to life for weeks. Or when Ma was operated on for a brain tumor and was later kidnapped by a madman. Who put a second bullet into Chase as part of last seasons A cliff-hange- r. And now on Dallas theres even talk of bringing Jock back. Jock was coveniently killed off in a plane crash when the actor who played him died. I guess they figure bringing him back would work since they somehow managed to have At any rate, Patrick Duffy, who plays Bobby, is back after a yearlong hiatus during which he was supposed to further his career. He wound up in a couple of shows like Jane Wyman is a good enough actress that one might be able to build a case for Falcon Crest. And there are some other pretty fair performers on that show. Several of the actors on Dallas even have pretty solid credentials. But the writing never has, and probably never will, live up to what those performers must hold out hope for. Donna Reed play Miss Ellie while the real Miss Ellie recuperated from a heart attack. Then they brought back Barbara Bel Geddes to fill her original role, which was fortunate, since Miss Reed died during the season. Its bad enough trying to keep track of the characters, but when real life gets mixed in, it becomes a mite confusing. But I guess Ill tune in tomorrow to try and discover just how Bobby did get in the shower and next week to see if Chase will make it again. And if something better comes along, well, theres always the VCR. Alcoholics Make A Choice Heart Disease Or Cirrhosis JOHN WATERBURY Dear John Letters rhosis, or heart disease, or any other physical malady. These problems are the resut of a disease process over which the alcoholic loses any ability to control. And unforutunate-ly- , America is not the only country to suffer for this disease. Its a problem that many are just now starting to recognize. Dear John: Recent research indicates that while high levels of cholesterol and saturated fats may cause heart disease, they offer some protection against alcoholic cirrhosis. So now the alcoholic can make a choice between cirrhosis and heart disease. And in either case, he can drink abusively. Where else but in America? But even though its impossible to ban all harmful substances, it is possible to curb their wilful misuse. However, before this can take place, parents need to understand what theyre up against. Sniffing is the process of inhaling certain vapors to create a modified state of consciousness. It is a habit that develops rapidly and one which is extremely difficult to break.
