Show WEST VALLEY VIEW Ramblin' On With just about a month left this year, the time has come to begin preparing the list of New Year's Resolutions that I'll sider for con- 1981. That way, I can discard the ones know I I wont keep before Ive committed myself to keep- . . . Mankind has had to suffer its repetition ever since. There are certainly ways of making resolutions that can be kept. Its really quite simple. Veteran comic actor Victor Buono used to show his method of sticking to resolutions with an annual appearance on the Johnny Car-soshow. n ing them. Then 1 wont have to make excuses for and whose name sounds sort of familiar, but you never put the two together. breaking 4, 1980 by Mike Gorrell In case you cant recall who Victor Buono is, hes one of those my resolutions. In fact, thats a good point to start from. I resolve not to say I never make resolutions because I know Ill break them. Adam probably gave that line to Eve just before she handed him the apple. It was even corny then. Look whats happened as a result. Thursday, Dec. actors whose face you recognize, Most of the time he plays a sneering Oriental-lookinheavy whos out to do-ithe hero in a spy farce. Hes a perfect foil for Inspector Clouseau. Youd know the guy if you saw him. Every year just about New Years Eve, as I recall, Buono would appear on the Carson show to g n announce his new list of resolutions, proudly noting that hed kept every single one hed made the previous year. I cant remember precisely what his resolutions were, but thats okay. That will allow me to adapt them to local conditions. All of Buonos resolutions were absurd, some totally absurd. And, believe it or not, you can find things just as absurd to write about in the Salt Lake Valley as youll ever find in New York City or L.A. Heres a few of that type of resolutions; my apologies to Victor Buono. I resolve not to drink water out of the Jordan River in a priceless wine glass. I resolve not to wear an Ayatollah Khomeini costume through the streets of Murray during the Christmas shopping rush. I resolve not to show up for a date with KUTVs Michelle King wearing knickers and green and orange- - I resolve not to believe some local radio announcers when they begin hyping up the University of Utahs football program next fall so that people actually think the Utes can beat BYU. resolve not to sneak Joe Dimagand his Mr. Coffeemaker into I gio resolve not to start jogging. Anyone associated with newspaper work knows that a reporters salary can hardly cover the necessities light blue plus a Nike or with suit matching jogging Adidas shoes so that I could be seen clomping along the roadside at rush hour. I striped socks. the Tabernacle. So much for that. Those are a few examples of resolutions that would be easy to keep. Not much chance of fouling up and breaking one of those. If it worked for Victor Buono, it can certainly work for me. And I dont even get to appear on national television to air my resolutions. But thats just one type of resolution. There are others of less absurdity which can be kept also, if you set your mind to it. Some are, Ill admit, easier than others. Ill start out with an easy one. That can be rough breathing in all that exhaust, but I suppose thats one of the hurdles one must overcome to gain high visibility in the eyes of the viewing public. Besides, some errant motorist with a sick dislike for physical fitness nuts might splash mud all and it would be over the baby-blue- s if someone too embarrassing recognized me at the Green Parrot as the jogger who wears a dirty outfit. I resolve not to be surprised when up as the Larry Topham pops candidate for Topham is the Harold Stassen of local politics. Its just a question of where hell appear next. One time its running for the U.S. Senate, then the Granger-Hunte- r Council in the first incorporation election (1978), then mayor of Salt Lake City . . . then governor ... and next . . . ? I resolve not to wear a West Valley Cops Are Tops button to the County Sheriffs office. Or conversely, distribute Youll Reap a Bounty By Returnin to the County bumper stickers at West Valley City Hall. Those are just a few possibilities. Theres no certainty, even probability, that any or all will be made. Thats the beauty of starting your resolutions early. If you dont like them, you can get rid of them before its too late. And youll never have to say I always break my resolutions anyway. American mayor Party of Provo. V.
