BUSY . . . Children are hard at work creating cookies last week at Academy Park school. NOTE - grade students taught by Anita Bainter at Academy Park elementary are learning how to cook in a series of cooking classes held every two or three weeks. It is a great experience for the children to learn to cook in class, as many of them do not have this opportunity at home and find it both enjoyable and educaMrs. Bainter tional, said. The students learn many skills that will be of use to them in their academic classes and in their future lives, she remarked. They learn to measure ingredients accurately, they read recipes and perhaps most important of all, they learn to follow directions. In order to do so, they learn to listen, she explained. Students soon discover that if they dont listen well they are unable to follow directions and get a good result from their efforts, remarked Mrs Bainter. Listening skills are invaluable throughout life, she pointed out and, since project held the children enjoy their cooking (and eating), the class teaches them the importance of listening. The students have already completed several projects, and are planning many more, including something special for each holiday. The students prepared their own feast for Thanksgiving, including dessert - pumpkin pies. The students made their own pastry, rolling it out and fitting it into muffin tins and mixed their own filling The pies turned out so Mrs. Bainter well, reported.
