(Chick) Hislop, former Ben Lomond track coach for the past eight years, was selected to fill the vacant position left when Ed Garvanian announced his resignation last spring. Numerous State champions have come under Coach Hislop's guidance, his most prominent being Wade Bell, olympian runner.A graduate from Ben Lomond in 1955, Hislop went on to Weber Junior College from 1955-57 where he placed 5th in the Na-tional Junior College two-mile race. He also excelled as a distance runner at Utah State University, where he graduated with a B.S. in secondary education. He is now completing his master's degree at U-tah State. Coach Hislop is married to the former Dianne Leatham and the couple has three children. According to Hislop, one of his major ambitions was to be-come a college coach. He is really pleased with the opportunity of staying within the local area and hopes to attract a variety of local high school trackmen to Weber State. Director of Athletics, Dale L. Gardner states that "We're happy to have Chick as a part of our staff and feel that his experience and success will add to Weber State track and field. Laurie White to reign as football queen In an election held last week, members of the football team voted Laurie White this year's football queen. Laurie is a junior. She has been one of Weber State's cheer, leaders for two year's, this year acting as head cheerleader. Football queen is chosen each year by members of the team by selecting several candidates and then voting on the winner. Laurie was crowned this year's royalty at last Saturday's game. Baseball tryouts Fall baseball tryouts will be held this Wednesday, October 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the John Affleck Park, according to baseball coach Blaine Sylvester. Coach Sylvester stated that all persons interested should bring their ownuniform. Cats salute members of first football squad The Wildcats of Weber State celebrated their 50th anniversary and collegiate football's 100th year last Saturday, Sep. tember 27 in their game with Northern Michigan. Weber's first football team, which was in 1919, was honored and several members of that team attended the game. Form, er coaches were also honored in the pre. game alumni banquet and halftime ceremonies. , October 8, 1919 was the first game the Wildcats played. They lost to Box Elder in Brigham City 20-0. Weber was called We. ber Normal College then and had only a two-year program. The first Wildcat squad fin-ished the seas6n with a two wins-six losses record. Joe Brewer was selected as captain of the squad coached by Malcom Watson. His assistants were Orval CarstensenandVard L. Tanner.
