Show WILL TAKE IL01L0. GENERAL OTIS ORDERED TO DISLODCE INSURGENTS. Admiral Dewey Will S end Two Warship to Aid i..-m-rI Otis' Trorj Spaniards Hae Asked for Protection. Washington, Dee. 24. Secretary i Alger has cabled General Otis at Manila Ma-nila to take possehsion of Iloilo at once. The step is taken in advance of formal relinquishment of sovereignty of Spain, on account of tiie gravity of the bituation there, it is supposed. Ilolio is the only point in the Philippines Philip-pines now under Spanish control, and it has been one constant fight with the insurgents to retain control. Admiral iJevvey reported recently that the Spaniards were holding Iloilo with 800 soldiers, and that citizens had a.sked him for warships to protect them. General Otis will probably send two regiments, and Admiral Dewey is expected ex-pected to detail the Charleston and Concord to aid the troops. The Spaniards will willingly relinquish relin-quish authority over Iloilo, it is understood, un-derstood, as they know they must evacuate soon. What the insurgents will do remains to be seen, but there is little fear in Washington of a serious clash, though our soldiers will be prepared pre-pared for any einergenc'. The war department has no confirmation confir-mation of the rumor that the insurgents insur-gents hae captured Iloilo. Should it prove true, General Otis may find some difficulty in dislodging them. It is hoped that the report is false, as this government wants to occupy that position pos-ition before the rebels get a foothold. |
