Actually, jet airplanes include commercial airliners (like the ones you can fly on), fighter planes, and military bombers. Jets include any plane powered by jet engines instead of propellers. Jet engines are amazing when you think that the power they make can get an airplane that weighs over half a million pounds into the air. Jet engines are also called gas turbines. Most engines work basically by sucking in air and pushing it toward the back of the plane. This makes the plane go forward. The reason this works is a law of physics called Newton's Third Law of Motion. Sir Isaac Newton experimented with physics and discovered that "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Try this experiment to see how Newton's Third Law of Motion works. Press the side of your hand against the edge of a table. Do you see how your hand is squished? Imagine the edge of the table pressing into your hand. Now press harder. The harder you press the more the table pushes back on your hand. The force of you pushing against the table is met with a force from the table. That is what Newton discovered and that is how jet engines work. The force of the hot gases and air being pushed tothebackoftheplanecausethe plane to move forward. How exactly do jet engines work? The engine uses a fan to Compressor Fan Air flows through a jet engine and ALILr ETEDTT EVENTS! Then a compressor with blades and fans squish the air together until it very high in pressure. Fuel is added to the compressed air and then a spark lights the mixture. The burning compressed air expands and shoots out the back of the engine. This force shooting backward makes the plane goes forward. The force of the plane going forward is called thrust. You can imagine how the air shooting out of the back of the engines makes the plane go forward if you fill up a balloon and then release it. As the air escapes out of the balloon, the balloon "shoots" across the room. As the thrust is increased, the plane moves faster. The wind going over the wings makes the plane "take-off" into the sky. Some of the most common types of jets are commercial airliners, fighter planes and military bombers. The Boeing 737, Boeing 777, Boeing 747, MD (McDonnell Douglas) 80, and the Airbus A319 are just a few of the different types of commercial airplanes that airline companies use. Boeing Boe-ing is one of the biggest airplane makers in the world. There are about 200 major airlines around the world and between them; more than 800 million people are transported to different places in the world each year. Chicago International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, averages more than one take off or landing land-ing every minute of every day! In total, about 30,000 flights are completed in the U.S. every day. For a long time, the Boeing 747 was the largest commercial Turbine Nozzle Mixer Combustor . pushes the plane forward. Military planes are identified with letters and numbers. num-bers. You probably have heard of an F-15 or an F-16. The "F" means the airplane is a fighter airplane. A plane with a "B" like the B-l, B-52 or B-2 means the plane is a bomber. "C" planes carry cargo like tanks, people, or supplies. Military planes also have names. Here are some of the names of military planes: B-2 Spirit, C-130 Hercules, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F-22 Raptor. F-15CEag F-15 fighter planes have two vertical stabilizers on the tail. F-16s only have one. Visit http:www.ueet.nasa. govStudentSiteaeronautics. html for more information about jets, airplanes and flying.
