Show The Uintah Utes had a bye last week, but the Union Cougars had to battle Hurricane High School on October 8. The Cats put up a good fight in Roosevelt, but they were defeated by the Tigers from Hurricane, Utah, 19 to 8. The Tigers had three touchdowns called back. Gubler, 6'11", 165 pounds, scored the first touchdown in the game on a 28 yard run and he also connected on bombs to his receivers in the game. "Gubler is the best quarterback that I've seen since I have been in the 2-A class. He is smart, quick and throws the ball better than anyone we have faced," stated Union coach, Jay Omer. "I thought our athletes played well, but we just couldn't handle number, 11, Gubler." Union's runningback, Juan Shields, rushed for over 170 yards and his 58 yard touchdown run and two-point conversion con-version cut Hurricane's lead to 13 to 8 late in the third quarter. Union was also behind by five points, but Hurricane marched down the field after the touchdown by Union and scored a touchdown, which gave them a 19 to 8 lead. Shields had 105 yards at the end of the first half. "Our offensive line did a good job of opening holes for Shields and our other runningbacks," said Omer. Outstanding performaces were also turned in by Bob Johnson and Bill Wright of Hurricane. Johnson, a 6'1", 230 pound, fullback, scored two touchdowns and picked up a lot of yards. A number of Vernal and Koosevelt fans attended the Utah Jazz season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers in Salt Lake City. Friday. The Jazz, who tied for the worst record in the National Basketball Association last year, jumped into first place with a 1-0 record due to a ten point w in over Portland. Adrian Dantley scored over 30 points to lead the Jazz and Darrell Griffith scored 26 points in his NBA debut. Dantley scored 19 points in one quarter as the Jazz gained revenge for a 16 point loss to Portland in the 1979S0 season opener. The Utah Jazz were the main attraction attrac-tion in the game, but there was also an interesting sideshow in the stands. One "die hard'' Portland fan attended the game in a Portland uniform, (shorts, t shirt, ball cap and tennis shoes). He also had a Portland pennant, which he waved when Portland did something that he approved of. Portland's head coach. Jack Kamsey, was whistled for a technical foul and the fan with the basketball uniform on, jumped out of his seal, extended ex-tended his arms and questioned the call by the referee. Sometimes the fan would just take off his cap and wave it around when he was upset with a call by the official. The Utah Ja.z should be n much improved im-proved team with Griffith, who should take some of the pressure off Utah's top scorer, Dantley. The Jazz also have some new players in Billy McKinney, guard; John Duren, guard; Brett Vroman, seven foot center; Wayne Cooper, center and Jeff Judkins, guard forward. Utah also has Ben Po-quette, Po-quette, forwanU-entcr; Allan Bristow, forward; Hon Boone, guard and James Hardy, forward center, back from last year. Judkins and Vroman are Utah natives. Judkins played his college basketball at the Univeristy of Utah. |
