UTE WRASSLERS DEMOLISH UNION, 50-0 IN PRELIMINARY TO REGIONAL MEETING Wednesday of last week at Union the Uintah Utes wrestling squad handed the Union Cougar grapplers a 50-0 defeat in a tuneup meeting of the two teams in preparation for the Regiorial Meet to be held at Union High School on Feb. 21 and 22. The Utes had little trouble in defeating the Union team as the Utes grapplers racked up high scores in winning every match of the evening. The Utes racked up 7 pins and 5 decisions in a clean sweep of the 12 main event matches. In the preliminary matches the Utes won 6, lost 1 and saw one of the 120 pound matches end in a draw. This was one of the excellent matches of the evening as Dennis Hacking of Uintah and Johnson of Union fought to a 7-7 draw. The Utes have been strengthened by the return of Jim Baxendale to the unlimited class after suffering an injury in-jury earlier in the season and the addition ad-dition of Ted Corless to the 165 pound class. ALTAMONT EDGES DUCHESNE 43-41 IN LAST HOOP PLAY Altamont was able to stave off a last quarter Duchesne rally to emerge winners win-ners by two points Friday night. Both teams played the full game with five players and saw Duchesne fail to take advantage of their foul shots in losing the close one as they hit a miserable 7 out of 16 foul attempts. Altamont held a 7 point margin as the third quarter ended but were hard pressed by the Duchesne squad in the final period. Elden Buckalew was top point maker with 20 for Duchesne and closed in on the top point makers of the Division with his performance. UHS SOPHOMORES DUMP TABBY TEAM Uintah High School sophomroe team played cat and mouse with an out classed Tabiona B team in an easy victory vic-tory to run their long win streak out another notch Friday at UHS. Coach Leo Conk had a new starting five which were hard pressed by the Tabby Tab-by squad and trailed the Tigers part way into the second period. The Utes took a 3-0 lead but Tabby fought back and held a 7-6 lead as the first period ended. The play was mostly defensive in this period as both teams were unable to run any scoring combinations and failed to hit when they took their shots. In the second quarter the Tigers took a 13-8 lead over the Utes and at this point Coach Conk began running in some of the main string who immediately im-mediately overtook the Tigers and Jumped to a 25-24 halftime lead. In the third period with Snyder, Wright, McNaughton, Lee and llor-rocks llor-rocks in for the Utes the score began to mound and the Utes held a comfortable comfor-table 44 18 lead as the period ended. Snyder was the top point maker in the period as he rapidly dumped in R points before leaving the floor. The final quarter saw the reserves for both teams back in the action w 1th Wright remaining in for the Utes to lead the offense and lead the Utrs to a 37 21 victory. Wright a top point maker for the Utes with 14 and Siantwre scored 13 for Tabiona to take hifch point honors of the game, Alo scoring for Uintah were: Snyder, 10; Woolley, 8; Lee, 8; McNaughton, 7; Merrell, 2; Roberts, 2; Gilbert, 2; Handy, Han-dy, 2 and Horrocks, 2. VARSITY BEAT DUCHESNE 59-34 HERE FRIDAY Uintah Utes Jr. Varsity completed the season's play with an easy 59-34 victory over the Jr. varsity of Duchesne High school Friday here. The win gave the Jr. Utes their 8th straight win in league competion this season and saw the Jr. team complete the third straight season without defeat. The Uintah squad counted with ten baskets during the first quarter to take the lead 20-7 during this period with all the players making points. The Utes had no trouble in controlling the game as they rebounded close to 90 percent from both backboards and worked the ball in for points by McNaughton and Snyder from under the basket. During the second period the Utes " were outscored from the field but added add-ed 9 points from the foul line to lead 35-19 at halftime. After the half the Utes increased their lead to, 52-23 and in the fourth period the Utes reserves played most of the period in finishing out the game to win 59-34. Jim McNaughton was high point man with 20 points for the Utes with Snyder adding ad-ding 11 and Horrocks 10. Cowan hit for 12 points to lead the Eagles. JESSE, JUSTIN, Jerry and Jacque Hodgkinson and Mike Son-nie Son-nie (not pictured) were winners in the annual Thanksgiving invitational in-vitational sponsored by .the Murray Swim Team. Swim team members place at Murray meet Five members of the Vernal Vipers Swim Team placed in the annual Thanksgiving Invitational sponsored by the Murray Swim Team last Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The meet attracted swimmers from five states: Washington, Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming. Vernal swimmer Mike Sonnie broke his personal record in competition Friday. Fri-day. Jesse Hodgkinson averaged 8th in his events, and his brother, Justin, also averaged 8th. Jacque Hodgkinson averaged 9th in her events. Jerry Hodgkinson took two firsts, a second, a third and a sixth place. He won a plaque for his efforts. The Vernal Vipers next meet will be at Skyline High School Dec. 10.
