Show JENS JENSEN services Thursday Jensen Pioneer Dies Funeral Set Today JENSEN Funeral services today Thursday at 1 pm p.m. in the Jensen Ward Chapel will honor Jens lens Jensen Jensen Jen Jen- sen 92 of Jensen who died in the Uintah Uin Uin- Uintah tah County Hospital Monday morning of causes Incident to age Mr Jensen was born January 16 1877 in Hilde Wyoming to Lars tars and Anna AnnaMarie AnnaMarie AnnaMarie Marie Christensen Jensen He lie and his parents moved from Hillyard Wyoming when Mr Jensen was two years old THEY THEY BROUGHT a team and wagon and small herd of cattle to the Uintah Basin They arrived at the old Burton Ranch on on the Green River at the mouth mouth- of Brush Creek in the fall I of 1879 where they lived in a cabin near the Burton- Burton family during that winter The winter they arrived was a a. a hard winter with heavy crusted snow His father had his his' cattle eattle on the rivet river bottoms bot bot bottoms toms about 2 miles from the Jensen Jensen Jen Jen- sen bridge The family lost about half of the cattle as there was no hay Inthe inthe in inthe the I country country- near where they lived LARS JENSEN and the Burtons built builta a kind of fort to protect themselves from the Indians It was during that fall that the Meeker Massacre took place One of the fort foit buildings an old cabin with port holes is still standing on the William Oakley residence In Inthe the year of 1881 the Jensen family moved down the river to a ranch about five miles below Brush Creek where Mr Jensen homesteaded The family dep depended chiefly on their few head of cows for a living They would deliver butter to Fort Thornburg three miles northwest of Vernal THE FIRST several y years ars In the area the Jensen family had a hard time obtaining obtaining ob ob- coffee flour fruit ammunition and other supplies The elder Mr Jensen Jensen Jensen Jen Jen- sen at one time paid the sum of 10 for a pound sack of flour About the year 1882 Mr Jensens Jensen's father decided to build a boat to cross the river to help supplement the family's income He built a regular cable ferryboat ferry ferryboat ferryboat boat in 1885 that could hold a four four- hoi horse se team and wagon JENS DENS RECALLED helping helping to ferry thousands of head of sheep cattle and horses horses' horses across across the river in the 11 years they ran the ferry In 1894 Lars Jensen built a larger ferry The last big run the Jensens made with the ferry was to transport 86 teams and wagons of runaway Indians who had left the Uintah reservation that summer to go to the Dakotas They realized a profit of 80 that day THE NEXT spring the ferry was taken down clown the river by a hugh ice jam After the ferry was gone Jense Jensen Jensen Jensen Jen Jen- sen stayed on their river farm and did some farming He married Ethel Hendrickson November November November No No- vember 7 1907 After living on the farm for three years he and his wife moved to Dragon where they bought and operated operated oper oper- a grocery store MR JENSEN and his family moved to Salt Lake City where he worked for two years on the railroad He lie later worked for a construction company Jense was noted as a veteran river man Inan making the daring river run from Lily Park on the Yampa River through the Split Mountain and Green River gorge on on the Green River alone in a 14 foot 14 foot open row boat The boat was one he had built himself Mr Jensen enjoyed building wilding boats beats and nd had made at least 55 boats beats He lie also did some carpenter work sharp sharp- end saws and in his later years carved carved car car- ved many items from wood HE AND his wife were later separated separated separ separ- and Mr Jensen returned to Jensen Jensen Jen Jen- sen to live with his mother until her death in 1931 Since then he lived in Jensen JenseR until the past few years when |
