Wallace and Frances Bennett with George Romney at a reception in Washington. were absent. However, they sent their love and greetings via tape recordings. Present were Dr. and Mrs. David W. Bennett and family, Salt Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. (Fletcher (Rosemary) and family, Summit, N. J.; and Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Jeppson (Frances) and family, Bethesda, Maryland. Guests included Spiro T. Agnew, George Romney, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, David Kennedy, Ambassador-at-LargTreasury Secretary George Shultz, a host of Senators and Congressmen and Utahns James Fletcher and Mitchell Melich. What went on was a kind With the start of 'the 92nd Congress, Senator Bennett became the 100th U. S. Senator in history to have served for 20 years or longer. He is now the 15th ranking Senator and the 5th ranking Republican. Senator Wallace F. Bennett has a long list of accomplishments in connection with his official duties, nevertheless he finds time for other activities. Active in the LDS Church all his life, since 1935 he has served as national treasurer of the General Sunday School Board and when Congress is in session, he teaches a Sunday School class in Washington, D. C. Besides this he has found -- Wallace F. Bennett is one of those rare men who brings success to his every endeavor. Success as a businessman. Success as a candidate for public office. Success as a United States Senator. Success in service to Nation and State. Son of pioneering hertiage, he came from a pioneer Mormon family. His father, John F. Bennett, traveled across the plains as a child in 1868, and settled in the Salt Lake Valley. Determination was required to overcome obstacles both human and natural. With this spirit, his father transformed a bankrupt paint business into a thriving paint and manufacturing and distribution organi- zation. Following his education and service as an officer in the U. S. Army, Wallace joined his fathers paint and glass firm as as office clerk, later to become President of the company in 1938. On September 6, 1922, he married a lovely girl he had gone to school with and who lived in the same neighborhood. Frances Grant, the daughter of President Heber J. Grant, had fallen in love with Wallace, her dream boat, when she was fifteen, but it wasnt until some years had passed before their love blossomed and they united before the altar in the Salt Lake Temple to be sealed as one by Frances father. President Grant. In 1939 he founded the Bennett Motor Company and trade organizations honored hime He was elected president of the National Glass Distributors "Association. . Other successful business pursuits in Utah attracted his attention and, in 1949, he was given the signal honor of being the first representative of a small business to be elected president of the National ciation of Manufacturers. In 1950, he accepted the challenge of public service and was elected Republican Senator from Utah. Today he is the ranking Republican on the powerful Finance Committee which writes the nation's tax laws and deals with Social Security, tariffs and trade. In addition he is the senior . Republican member of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee; is Chairman of the oh Republican 'Committee Committees; Vice Chairman of n Senate Ethics the Committee, and serves on the Joint Committees on Atomic Energy, Defense Production, and Internal Revenue Taxation. Being from a state rich in natural resources Senator Bennett has a deep interest in mineral and water resources. He is an expert in both fields Blue-ribbo- and devotes much time and energy to the crucial problems involving them. Vice-Preside- nt e, of time to author two books. Bennett celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary August 30 with a party and program hosted by their 27 grandchildren, with festivities held in the giant caucus room in the Old Senate Office Building in the nation's capitol. Of the five Bennett children and their families, only Wallace 3. Bennett, President of the England South Mission of the LDS Church, and his family ,This-Is-Your-Li- fe . for the occasion, they portrayed the senior Bennetts lives in skits. Wallace F. Bennett and his lovely companion have lived full and successful lives, honored, respected and loved by their family and associates. We, at Woman's Review, are pleased to honor Senator and Mrs. Bennett for their devotion and dedication. We wish them continued happiness, success and enjoyment of life. |
