Show life B4 MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 10 • 2007 Live shows attack Utah, and this is only the beginning Modest Mouse, Muse and Editors only a handful of bands hitting Salt Lake and Orem this week Chad Hunt Assistant life editor This week is a big week for live shows, and most everyone is probably pumped for at least one of them. The good news is that this is only the first in a series of big weeks for live music in Utah County and Salt Lake City. As mentioned briefly in last week's edition, Modest Mouse will be at the McKay Events Center Sept. 10 with Rilo Kiley and Matt Costa. Tickets are $33.50 (if they're still available) for the show, which is looking to be an excellent one. By now, anyone who is a fan of Isaac Brock's brainchild has heard We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, and fans of Jenny Lewis and crew are probably really in Under The Blacklight these days. Both bands are currently touring in support of these two releases. Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Sleeping With Giants tour, featuring The Academy Is..., hits In The Venue in Salt Lake City. Support for the tour in- cludes Armor for Sleep, the Rocket Summer and Sherwood. Doors for this show open at 6 p.m. and tickets are around 20 bucks. It should be a pop-punk extravaganza. Also on the agenda for Sept. 12, is the Muse show at McKay Events Center with Juliette and the Licks. This show gets underway at 7 p.m. and is a little bit pricier at $32 a ticket. But those in attendance will get their money's worth from these two amazing bands. On Sept. 13, Thursday, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will stop through Salt Lake's In The Venue. Touring on their fresh album, BABY 81, the Club always put on great shows whenever they go out on the road. This show is $ 15, plus a service charge, and doors will open at 7 p.m. Rounding out this week's shows is Editors' coming in concert, also making their presence at In The Venue. With support from Biffy Clyro and Ra Ra Riot, this show is a later performance, not getting underway until after 8 p.m. But it will be well worth the later evening and well worth the $17.50 price tag (if you buy your tickets in advance at 24tix.com). For habitual show-goers, this week is going to be packed solid with shows almost every evening. Just don't forget to get up for your early morning classes the next day. CINEMAS from Bl there's a fear of indie movies because they're known as being extreme, vulgar and offensive. It's true 98 percent of them are "R" rated, but the 2 percent that aren't have the best characters, the best acting and the most original stories." As well as introducing indie hits, Festival Cinemas will also be showing BYU football games live, and the best part is that they'll be free of charge. > If you're still turned off to the idea of discount theaters because of the reputation of being filthy, sticky, and gross, throw your worries aside knowing that the deep-clean remodeling will include getting the grime off those floors, replacing the carpet and fixing every sidedipping, "spring-less" seat. The new management is doing everything possible to make Festival Cinemas as great as it sounds like it will be. You now have no excuse for avoiding discount theaters. If you want to check out the change for yourself, this weekend is the Grand Opening of Festival Cinemas. There will be prizes, concert tickets and much more. The first of the indie movies to arrive will be Waitress, a lightweight, somewhat romantic comedy that makes for a perfect cheap date night. For those who love indie movies, you no longer have to drive all the way to downtown Salt Lake to see them. For those who have been interested in knowing what the hype is behind indie movies, now is your time to find out for yourself. And for those who don't want to pay to sit.in obnoxious "Zoobie" crowds to watch the Cougars' games, now you don't have to. APPLE from Bl 50 YEARS OF FALLING IN LOVE Jewelers the battery life is longer. The iPod Video really only had a few adjustments made to it this year. Most notably it underwent a name change. It's now called the Classic. The change in the capacity of these titans will make some music fans go nuts. The capacities are now 80 gigs in place of 30 and 160 gigs in place of the 80. The battery life is also supposed to be improved, as is the user interface. being readied for an iTunes store that works with Wi-Fi. This pretty impressive lineup change shows that apple is making strides to consistently stay on top of their game as far as this musical wonder device is concerned. In fact, it's beginning to go beyond music and into the sphere of pocket-sized computers. It's almost like when all the car companies unveil the new model cars for the year. The biggest thing about this year's iPod collection is the unveiling of the touch screen version. It's basically an iPhone without the phone feature and it's thinner. The iPod Touch also includes WiFi internet that can browse Safari and YouTube. It's also It wouldn't be a shocker if pretty soon the iPod won't go by generation, rather they'll be designated by model years. When you ask your friends about their iPods, they'll either have the new 2011 classic or a pre-owned 2007 Nano. GRAND OPENING Only In COTTONTREE SQUARE • (801) 373-1000 2230 N.
