Show holiday/ D4 MONDAY • NOVEMBER 20 • 2006 :J :J Pholo Courtoiy of Ninlondo v Jason Adkins College Times | he next-generation console wars are upon us with the release of the Sony PlayStation 3 last Friday and the Nintendo Wii (pronounced we) this past Sunday. The PS3 and Wii hope to compete with the Xbox 360, which was released during the 2005 holiday season. What the next-generation consoles give you are, of course, greater graphics and more features ihen their predecessors. The PS3 will give you backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games and even games from the original PlayStation console. The PS3 also offers a built-in hard drive and a Blu-ray drive that let's you play the high-definition Blu-ray discs. The Wii's selling points include backwards compatibility with Gamecube discs and also a cool new controller that can detect motion. This part of the package sets it apart from others, since you can use the controller to act as a sword or knife for fighting games, or lo swing a tennis racket or baseball bat for sports games. The Wii even comes with Wii Sports in the box that allows one to play baseball, bowling, boxing, golf and tennis to get full use out (it the new controller. Both consoles have an online component that allows for multi-player games, communication with other players and new content for download for some games. The Wii offers something that no other console has, old Nintendo games from the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo. N64, Sega Genesis and the NEC TurboGrafx consoles available for download. The Wii will be a better bargain as it is only $250 at launch, while the PS3 is more costly at $499 for the basic system and $599 for a premium system that includes wireless internet capabilities, a larger hard drive and memory card slots. If you decide to buy a new game system this holiday season, you may be out of luck in getting your hands on an PS3 as approximately 400,000 consoles were shipped to the U.S. for its launch, while the Wii should be an easier find. You can always try camping out at Best Buy or Wal-Mart for a few days before it goes on sale to try to get your hand on a new consoles, but for those desperate to get your hands on the latest and greatest gadget, there is always Ebay, but expect to pay at least SI.000 for one in time for Christmas.
