BOUGHTON WB134 801-830-8004 WWW.UTAHGUARD.COM Rexburg indie-rock band winning fans in Utah County Chad Hunt Life Writer From the rubble of their first, short-lived band experience, Tim Beck (bass) and Adam Ebberts (keys, programming, "kaoss" pad) purchased some beat machines, wrote a couple of songs, and began following their dreams of putting together a dance/ electronic/trance band. Before long, Dave Neiman was playing guitar for the band, sporting a trademark mustache, while introducing vocalist/guitarist Travis Shumate to the group, and The Belafonte was born. Not to be confused with, or having derived the name from the legendary Harry Belafonte, Ebberts clarified the origination of the name, explaining that the name "comes from the film The Life Acquat/c, it was the name of the ship that the Zissous used for their explorations." Powered by their "indie-electro-pop" sound, the local Rexburg heroes have been picking up fans in the Rexburg and Utah County areas for just over a year. Their influences include The Postal Service, The Flaming Lips, Fischerspooner and New Order, Courtesy photo sxc.hu Rexburg band The Belafonte break into the local music scene. and their sound corresponds. Even so, The Belafonte keep their musical blend unique and still manage to bounce to the beat of a slightly different program. "We1 re not the only band out there with electronic drums and synthesizers, that's for sure, but I think we do it without being your typical new wave style. We have more of an indie-rock feel I think, and that sort of makes us stand out," said Ebberts about the unique sound the band produces. They have one independent release; an EP titled / Fired Once and Dropped My Gun a six-song musthave album for anyone who is into the local indiepop/rock scene. Unfortunately, the only way to get your hands on their EP is to catch them in concert. Although they aren't from the state, The Belafonte have used their network of bands and friends from the area to build a strong following in the Utah music scene. "I wouldn't consider us much down there, but if we are, we owe it all to bands like Seve vs. Evan and The Handsome for letting us jump onto their shows and poach some of their fans," said Ebberts about their presence in Utah County. "We like playing there because there will always be someone who hasn't heard us yet, and we have one more chance at winning someone over." Check out The Belafonte the next time they drop in for a visit and a show. Ad Astra Per Aspera is a fairly well known, truly indie band. Being from Kansas, where the state motto is "Ad Astra Per Aspera, " this band is deeply set in their roots and knows where they are going. Mike: I play guitar and sing. Julie plays keyboards and sings. Kurt plays the drums and percussion. Brooke plays the guitar and percussion and sings a bit. Scott plays the bass and the tambourine. Caz: What's it like being from Kansas? Is the scene pretty strong? Caz: So, tell me a bit about Catapult Calypso. Is this your first full length? But, rather than different-sounding bands shunning one another, they accept each other and it makes for fun shows. Caz: Yes! I love the scene outside of big cities for that very reason. What is it about the indie genre that you think everyone, at any age, can enjoy? Mike: It's a huge genre. It's become a catchall for many different styles of rock music, which is fine. But to be truly indie music, it has to come from an independent label. Mike: Yes, we worked on the songs for a couple of years. We recorded in chunks, saving up money from shows and paying the recording fees as we went. We signed with Sonic Unyon, our label, in June 2006, right after we got the record back from being mastered. Caz: So you're about to take off on a tour from Oct. 20 through Dec. 13, hitting up several states. Are there particular bands you are touring with? Cities you're looking forward to? Mike: We' re mostly touring alone. I'm looking forward to Chicago, NYC ,?.-.- \7. Rexburg band The Beiafonte break into the local music scene. and Austin. But honestly, I've been to almost every city we're playing, and I'm stoked to go back. Caz: How often have you toured in the last five years? Any crazy tour stories that you won't let each other live down? Mike: We've done four tours before, but nothing this long. We've had several tour mishaps. Once in Chicago, we took the trailer off so we could park in an alley. Kurt removed the hitch pin, which keeps the trailer hitch connected to the car. Kurt forgot to replace the hitch pin, and as were driving down a busy street the trailer disconnected from the car and began veering wildly into traffic. It was still attached by the safety chains, and somehow we found another hitch pin in the car. Caz: So, what does Ad Astra Per Aspera mean to you? Mike: It's the process of creating, and if we succeed at nothing else, at least we've done that. fire in her. JCOUNTRY DANCING ! W/CURREKIT STUDENT ID 1 : j EVERY SATURDAY BEFORE 9 3 0 P.M.
