Student club hopes to foster political dialogue John Ditzler Executive Editor UVSC's newly-rechartered Students for Political Awareness Club is putting out a concerted effort to raise socio-political awareness among college students with tentativelyplanned public debates, round tables and a publication consisting of student and faculty submissions. According to club President James Sharp, the club is in cooperation with ASUVSC to arrange and sponsor the bringing of medium profile public speakers and the staging of panel discussions and debates with interested students and faculty participating. "We'd love to have, say, a public debate between the UVSC College Republi- cans and the UVSC College Democrats, as one example," said Sharp. The club's publication Political Awareness Forum is published once monthly. The next deadline for submission is Nov. 27. Sharp said the club and the publication work hard to not favor one political party over another. "We welcome people of all sociopolitical persuasions," said Sharp. "We are bi-partisan because we seek perspectives from Democrats and Republicans, but we are not just bi-partisan. If we only recognize Republicans and Democrats, others will feel left out. We would like participants from the Black Student Union, from the Gay-Straight Alliance, from Libertarians, etc." "Our aspirations are two pronged," said Sharp, "We want to educate the student body politically and give the students and faculty a voice to discuss socio-political issues." "We hope people will vocalize their beliefs and act on them," said Sharp, "I know there a lot of people that are politically informed on this campus but don't know how to share that with their peers." James said he laments what he sees as a political apathy within college communities.
