The conference's history of hosts has historically consisted primarily of institutions that have doctoral programs specific to the society's undertakings. Considering that UVSC features only an undergraduate philosophy program, the opportunity for the school to play host to the second largest philosophy conference in North America is rare and tremendous. Shannon Mussett and Pierre Lamarche are professors of philosophy at UVSC who trade off teaching an Existentialism and Phenomenology course, offered at UVSC every few semesters. Both professors are active members of SPEP, and are greatly involved in the work going into the conference. La- marche said that two or more years ago the executive committee of SPEP showed a generous interest by proposing that UVSC host the 44th annual conference. This interest seemed to indicate that SPEP sees in UVSC what many others see and note-that UVSC's liberal arts program has bonded an array of exceptional professors and students. SPEP's mission statement reads, "The purpose of this society is to promote scholarship, teaching, research, and publication affiliated with phenomenology, existentialism and other traditions associated with continental philosophy." Both Lamarche and Mussett have submitted and presented many papers to the society, and in this year's conference another UVSC philosophy professor, Michael Shaw, is on the program to present a paper. "We expect anywhere from four to five hundred people attending the conference, from all over the North American continent-from all over the world," Lamarche said. Between 15-20 student volunteers, many of them • Fall Break • Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, SLC Downtown Marriott philosophy majors, will be assisting professors in ensuring the conference goes smoothly. "[The students] are going to have the opportunity to listen and help host a professional philosophy convention . . .They will be able to meet and talk to people they might be working under," Lamarche said. A publisher's book exhibit will be held in Salons G-J beginning at noon on Thursday. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. This display is organized in cooperation with publishers specializing in scholarship influenced by continental philosophy and literary, social, and political theory. On Wednesday, October 19, the day before the conference starts, UVSC will also be hosting a symposium on Jean-Paul Sartre on campus in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The symposium will go from 3-5 p.m. in room LA 235. Speakers will include J.C. Berendzen of Loyola University New Orleans, Bill Martin of DePaul University Chicago, and David Sherman of the University of Montana-Missoula.
