Show Uhlig continued from page 10 The reporters became angry and accused Uhlig or hiding the artifacts Uhlig had them removed from the base because of their inappropriate behavior Because of this incident Uhlig had an artist friend of his make something that would look like an alien She did by sewing green nylon stockings together in the form of an alien being and stuffing the stockings to look like a “little green man" They crammed the “alien" into a large mayonnaise jar and placed it in Uhlig's office As a joke Uhlig's technicians look the “alien” to an engine test cell one hot humid Ohio day These people put the jar containing the stuffed “alien" on a black bar stool in the middle of the test cell The temperature of the room was then lowered to 6SF and the room was lit with an eerie dim light When the doors to the test cell were thrown open the hot humid air outside hit the very cold air inside the cell creating an instantaneous fog This fog eliminated the glare from the glass jar and the “alien" appeared to levitate within the test cell The head of the Acropropulsion labora -- tory was also with Uhlig and his technicians and threatened to Court Martial all of them if they ever showed such a thing to reporters Aside from his military career Uhlig has other accomplishments He had an article published in Penthouse magazine The article was one that exposed what he saw as inappropriate behavior on the part of the government He wrote about how they dealt with the Branch Dividians of Waco Texas There was evidence that the government had used 700 pounds of a gas called CS when they claimed to have used 25 pounds Eight months after the publication of the article in April 95 the government admitted to using 800 pounds of CS Uhlig received his bachelor's degree from the Virginia Military Academy an all men's college lie received his doctorate from the University of Utah where his major was in physical chemistry and his minor was in math and physics lie has taught at CEU 5 years Before that time he taught at Salt Voices from the past Lake Community College Clark Technical College US Air Force Academy and the Air Force Institute of Technology He taught at MIT and the University of Utah as teacher's assistant He received his first experience in aerospace at the age of seven He relates the story of when he went out on "Dawn” Patrol “against what we referred fo in those days as 'Japs'” He went off the roof of his house in an orange crate aircraft he and his friend had designed to be their very own plane Just like real pilots they took their father's silk scarves and wrapped them around their necks They secured the “aircraft" to the roof set the propeller in motion and cut the rope that held them in place For a few seconds a young Dr Uhlig actually flew The landing on the other hand was not quite as remarkable When hard reality hit the two boys his friend's first words were “I should have turned the propeller a not realize was that someone was inside The old man inside kicked the boards out of the back of the outhouse climbed out and fell into the hole When he poked his head up he yelled and cursed each one of the boys and identified them even in the moonlight Those names remained etched in his mind and years later the man identified Dr Uhlig’s name on a check he had handed him and the old man proceeded to yell and cuss Dr Uhlig also left his legacy at an all-girl- ’s Frcdricksburg college Maryland in He climbed an ivy covered wall on a girl's dorm to receive a long passionate good night kiss The vine fell with him on it and a large scar from where the ivy pulled away still remains on the side of the building today He has worked as a bender where he blew glass has cleaned sewers worked as a groundsman and lineman and as a mechanic in a Ford garage He has worked in fire pro- tection synthetic turbine engine lubricants and was even an original “snake oil salesman” for the Oil Shale Industry His many experiences are used to help grab the students interest and help them understand the concepts lh?y are learning The students voted for a man they knew had the experience to teach them He enjoys his students and believes learning should be fun He also believes in working his students hard He stated tlat “Of all the awards I have earned this one means the most because it is from the students who I love" faster" As a young boy late one night he and his friends decided to push over an outhouse What they did continued from page 12 Holdaway shown with his wifs Carolyn daughter Melanie and son Jason with journalism I loldaway still uses the skills of communication he learned as a journalist “A lot of people probably underestimate the value of communication They think 'I don't need to know how to communicate' but when you get ‘ out into the real world that's what it is all about If you can't communicate you can't get your job done" in Estate Holes your coverage?
