Show A Mr. Curtis, while making a speech at Providence, R. I., lately, made several burning, sarcastic hits. Among others he noted that when Voltaire was insulted by a London mob, he turned at his door and complimented his tormentors upon the nobleness of their national character, their glorious Constitution and love of liberty. The London mob did not comprehend his sarcasm. America scorns experience and becomes a law to herself. None understood this more fully than the foreigner who once remarked at Washington: "I did not fully comprehend your greatness until I saw your Congress. Then I felt if you could stand this, you could stand anything, and I now understand the saying that God take care of children, drunken men and the United States." |
