The refugees succeeded in escaping by small boats from the Mekong Delta and from offshore islands, including Phu Quoc, near the southern coast of South Vietnam. Numbering several hundred, the refugees were interviewed for this column by Father Raymond J. de Jaegher, whose contacts with thejanti-Communiunderground is in South Vietnam considered the best in the West. In his report from Taipeh, Father de Jaegher reveals that the resistance forces now consists of elements of at least two former South Vietnamese armies, two many paratroop brigades, members of the Buddhist Iloa Hao sect, and a number of Catholic groups which originally came to the South from North Vietnam. One of the leaders of the new resistance forces is Father Hoang Quynh. who originally helped evacuate tens of thousands of Catholics from North Vietnam in the 1950s and again from' the Central Highlands in South Vietnam during last spring's all out communist offensive that led to the takeover of Saigon by North Vietnamese troops. The courage and effectiveness of the resistance forces were highlighted by their takeover over, the provincial capital of Cantho in the Delta.
