Show SWINE confiscation sheriff fowler and constable encounter breakers something over a month ago charles baker commonly known as tex and A M caldwell were both released from the county jail having been discharged by the district court on the verdict of the jury being set aaice in their trial for horse stealing these two parties in connection with two more haldwell Oal dwell boya have been living on provo bench after their discharge they obtained employment on the farm of jos thompson while thare they were accused of confiscating a pig the property of mr joseph morgan that waa running at large on the farm mr morgan went to Thompson 3 farm one day and noticing come very suspicious circumstances and receiving an amount of abuse from these individuals he went over to the adjoining farm where he found mr turner who accompanied him bachand bac kand rendered him valuable assistance si in for the missing animal finally a short distance from their fire where they had been grubbing sagebrush along the water sect in a masa of sweet clover they found a seamless sack with three quarters of a young pig in it this with other suspicious circumstances caused mr morgan to come to town and swear out a complaint against abo suspected individuals A warrant was thereupon issued for the arrest of the three cald wells and tex and placed in the hands of sheriff fowler for execution taking constable fawcett along with him sheriff fowler went to the farm where the culprits had been working not finding them there they proceeded to the residence of the cald wells and inquired oi mrs caldwell if the boys were at home she answered no dr but there was something in the twinkle of her eye that the sheriff altogether like and which made him believe she was not telling the truth the sheriff looked around and in an anteroom ante room espied a small stairway leading to an unfinished room above he immediately started up these stairs followed by constable fawcett when I 1 within three or four steps of the top tex stepped out with a six shooter which he cocked and presented to the oviers telling them to stop while A M and cald bell stood over the police with an axe and a piece of a shovel handle the sheriff however being the best talker only took about ten or fifteen minutes to persuade pur suade them to give up their weapons and all four accompanied the officers to provo to have an interview with justice booth which resulted in tex and A M committed for petty larceny to the county jail for 16 days each when they complete their terms of imprisonment they will have a hearing on a charge of resisting the officers while in the discharge of their duties |
