Show well it will be an indication ot the students. It they vote h' m !i community may still claim the crown as the politically novative group it should be. If they don t vote, well then may once again be branded with the same apathy label thev S in the 1950s. Whether you agree with this editorial or not is not really ,, What is important is that you exercise your right to vote " your opinion. It's a cliche. But it's still pretty true. So we en VOu-whether you back United We Stand or Make It HaDn vote to make sure the elections commission gets the 20 n turnout it needs for a valid election. Therefore we endorse United We Stand. We endorse Todd Haw Max Coff for ASUU president and vice president. And we h,e vote for them too. But no matter whom you back, please vote Maybe this editorial will again turn into the kiss-of-death Wek not. And we hope our dreams can come true. Darrell F. Leo Editor-in-chief The Daily Utah Chronicle A letter from the editor Chronicle endorsement: the kiss of death? An endorsement from the editor of The Daily Utah Chomcte n usually be construed as the proverbial JZse like to change that record. And this year we ve de ,ded o endorse Todd Hayes and Max Coff for ASUU president and vce president well as the entire Un.ted We Stand ticket. This year Before our readers now become furious let us expla n ' Th vear we have covered meetings, watched the actions of C rover Thornp son's administration and, of course, cnticzed. But we also realized that this year's student government has been ver y effe ct.ve m novative and an overall success. Thus we would like to see the ame effective, innovative and successful student government continue And we think it can continue with Todd Hayes, Max Coff and the United We Stand ticket. That is not to say that their opponents Duane Moss and Norm Alb.ston could not do a good job. Most likely they coulc . They ave shown their strength in the primaries by getting g vote, by sliding to an easy first-place victory. And that says something about their organizational skills. But we still endorse United We Stand. The staff of The Chronicle is made up of journalists. And iournalists on this campus have always been branded as the world s greatest cynics We have been called pessimistic and cynical and, believe ,t or not, reactionary. But if we are the world's greatest cymes, we are also the world's greatest dreamers. We have seen the world and this campus as it is and we see it as how it should be. We are dreamers because we know things need to be changed and we think things can be changed. And Todd Hayes and Max Coff and the United We Stand people share the same dreams. Last year the United We Stand party started off as a dream. It dreamed about electing Crover Thompson as a near-impossible write-in write-in candidate. That dream succeeded when everyone told United We Stand it couldn't win. This year United We Stand climbed out of a nightmarish situation where three liberal candidates split votes and hairs while the Make It Happen ticket ran away with the primary prize. It again looks like an impossible situation. The opposition is running head and shoulders in front of any candidate. But if Crover Thompson could win last year, maybe United We Stand can win again this year. This year's election may be typified now as liberal versus conservative. conserva-tive. But it doesn't have to be. We feel United We Stand-a year older and a year wiser-can succeed in living up to its name, in uniting all students no matter what race, religion or political belief. But more important, this year's election will be a test of the students. |
