To the faithful few who have made their trousers baggy at the knees praying for the return of good, old comic opera, Frank Daniels and his come in response to fervent prayer. The jingling, musical nonsense in which Frank Daniels is Office Boy appearing at the Salt Laketheatre is, of course, some degrees removed from comic opera. But the frequency with which one catches glimpses of a plot and the determination with which foolish horseplay is supplanted by healthy comedy is a happy sign that musical composers and lyric writers are trying to get back into the deserted p?ths of the long ago. To say the least, The Office Boy is a sign of encouragement, and, every now and then, through its Sheepshead Bay atmosphere, one can actually see symptoms of comic opera above the horizon of the footlights. It is only, however, as a promise of what might be that The Office Boy is entitled to any unusual consideration, for, in all essential features, it does not rise above the commonplace of accepted musical comedy. It is a little surprising that Mr. Englander has failed to inject more distinctive music into his Instead of refreshing and original bursts of melody, the orchestra remains provokingly reminiscent. But this does not detract in the least from the force of the peculiar opportunities found for the still more peculiar drollery of Frank Daniels. Never for a moment does he forget that The Office Boy was written to fit his personality the facial expressions, the funny movement of eyebrows, the convulsive twists of legs, the humorous manner of gesticulation, in fact all those hilarious mannerisms which have caused him to be known as a display for a favorite daughter. Although The Office Boy has purposely been made a one man show, with Frank Daniels as the one man, yet the friends and admirers of Sallie Fisher are proudly surprised at the extent to ' which she contributes to the gener lyric charm and performance and thewhich she invests expressiveness with a role that gains much through her girlish, breezy personality. There are many of us who will watch the career of Sally Fisher with perfect confidence as to its successful future. The best song in The Tenderfoot is My Alamo Love with a catchy mixture of ragtime, negro and Spanish languor. About the most violent expression of rational approval concerning The Tenderfoot is to describe it as dainty the word that was used in my hearing. As the was a speaker lady, she, no doubt, referred to the numerous disolay of rainbow costumes which moved about the stage in a procession of burning colors a large part of the three million dollars Importation from France Qs reflected in recent custom returns. But dainty in any other sense No! One might as well apply the misused adjective to lobster croquettes. & & Held's military band will begin Its regular concert season at the Grand theatre.
