Show Pat Garcia Wins First Mini Triathalon The student body officers of Grantsville and Tooele high schools tame up with a novel contest to close out the school year and their idea turned out to be a good one. n The idea was to stage a mini-triathalo- between hardy students of the two schools and five from Tooele and two from Grantsville entered the race. The contest consisted of swimming 10 laps in the Tooele swimming pool, cycling 8.2 miles from the pool to the intersection of highway 112 and Durfee Street and running the final 2.1 miles, ending at the Grantsville Middle School. May 17, 1984 Tooeles Pat Garcia overtook Grantsvilles Rich Thornton about halfway through the running portion of the event and won in the time of 45 minutes flat. Thornton finished second in the time of followed by another 45:22, Grantsville competitor, Thomas Winden whose time was 46:05. Winner Of Tough Race Tooeles Pat Garcia won the first triathalon endurance test. Tooele Girls, 6 Boys Qualify For State Track Complete results of the Region Six track meet, held at Murray last week have not been received, but it is known that Tooeles terrific girls team has qualified seven for the state meet, and that the boys qualified six. g In a loss at the Region meet, coach Laurie Andersons girls came within one point of winning the Region champion- COIM68 heart-breakin- CO' sues ship, losing to Murray by the slender margin of 110 to 109. Tooele which had led throughout most of the meet was finally overtaken and passed by Murray in the final two events of the meet, the 200 meter dash and the mile relay. Far and away the outstanding runner in the girls competition D was the sensational Lisa Burgoyne of Tooele who came away with three Region championships. Lisa won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter events and was hardly challenged in any one of the races. Miss Burgoyne will be a strong candidate to duplicate this feat at the state track meet, Thursday and Friday atBYU. In the boys competition Tooele came up with three gold medal winners with Thom Gourdin winning the gold in the javelin throw, Kyle Lewis in the high jump and Max Walters in the shotput. BYU Coach Will Conduct Swim Clinic Brigham Young University head coach, Tim Powers, and some of the Cougar swimmers will be in Tooele Saturday to conduct a clinic for the Tooele swimmers beginning at 8:00 a.m. The clinic will include video taping and stroke analysis of all the swimmers by Coach Powers and individual help on the starts, turns and strokes by members of the Cougar swimming team.
