I would really like to voice my opinion in the matter of crimes, especially sexual, against our children. I would appreciate if there were better and more extensive coverage of this in our paper here locall- yI would like to be aware of what is happening and what steps are being taken in regards to prevention, correction, punishment and involvement. I was very concerned when I read recently of a man who was charged with five felony counts for allegedly sexually abusing a child and then further in the article it stated he was released on a $5,000 bond. What does that say in regards to the safety of our children? So henious a crime as this can be printed in a small section with no more coverage than that? Worse yet, such an allegation merits only a $5,000 bond? I dont know which disturbs me more I suppose it is the unwillingness on part of us as people to acknowledge and deal with these crimes, let alone the people who commit them. Let me explain. . . I am certainly not in favor of exploiting such situations, but I believe we need to sit up and realize that crimes against our children, sexual and physical, are in epidemic proportions and they are happening right here right here in Tooele! Not 45 miles up the road e or across the nation in a city, or among a people with no spiritual guidance, but - - million-peopl- here! Some changes have come about recently with an awareness cam- paign being presented to our children through schools and some concerned groups, but it would seem to me that there is more that can be done, especially on the part of the local media. Crimes against children are of a most serious nature and deserve to be treated fully and openly, this can only be done if more people get involved, especially the media. Lets talk about it, read about it and And a way to deal with it. If we dont protect the children, who will? HoDeene Hansen Army Donations Editor, In view of the recent rebuilding facilof some of the ities of the Salvation Army in Utah, a local citizen effort was conducted to invite contributions from Tooele County citizens. As lead participants, we would like to publicly thank those proud of the staff of Tooele High Alternative School. I will not have a student at the Alternative School next year, though I have three other teenagers. But I will support, as I wish everyone would, the need for this school in Tooele. Tooele needs the Alternative High School. They are doing a wonderful job. They understand, they care, they help. They give, and they see what these students need! Please support the Tooele High Alternative School. Name Withheld Display Thanks Editor: It has been a pleasure to display our local women artists paintings along with the traveling AAUW Art Exhibit held at the community room upstairs at the Interstate Bank in Tooele. The manager, Mrs. Shirley Worthington, has been most gracious in allowing us to use the banks facilities for this exhibit. It is rewarding to see such outstanding art work from our artists of Tooele Valley. Many people enjoyed the exhibit as well as the reception held April 10. A special thanks to all who helped in any way to make this exhibit so successful. Our women artists are especially talented. Katie Wilson American Association of University Women Off To Hawaii Editor: Reportedly, the county commissioners recently took a trip to St. George. Im sure the people of Tooele County would be very interested in the purposes and benefits of this trip. Perhaps the commissioners would provide us with a report of the trip? Additionally, there have been reports that a trip has been planned for the county commissioners and county department heads to go to Hawaii I think the taxpayers have a right to know if they are going to pay for this trip. If so, what is its purpose and what benefits to the county will be realized by it? Will we also be paying for wives to go? Surely the citizens of this county should be aware of such a trip before the fact, not after. Perhaps the Commissioners will be willing to Time is precious, but more precious than time. min Disraeli truth is - Benja- As another school year comes to a close, its time for me to thank all those who generously gave their time and energies to the bookmobile program this year. Reading is no less important today as we enter the "computer age than it has been in previous years. We will not have an efficient, creative, competitive, and skilled labor force unless children learn to read well. The ability to read is a vital part of the democratic process. We will not have an informed and active electorate unless our children acquire reading skills. Reading provides people of all ages with hours of entertainment as well as a means of Through books we can reach beyond our isolation and explore and know other worlds, learn new skills, and achieve new insights. Those who support our public libraries serve their communities well. They deserve the respect and appreciation of all of us. The combination of teenage energy and the earnest desire to help those in need has never been more in evidence than during the past four days and nights. Tooele teens unleashed their combined energy in helping avert a major catastrophe as a result of uncontrollable flood water. The youth of this community are the major reason much of Tooele has not suffered irreparable damage, and possibly additional loss of life. Anyone who has seen the youth of our community in action during the crisis has been amazed at their energy and enthusiasm. And all can be thankful that these young people have unified their efforts and directed their energy toward the prevention of a possible disaster. It is estimated that 600 homes would have suffered severe damage, perhaps even destroyed had it not been for these efforts. These not boys and girls but young people men and women are largely responsiyoung ble for the prevention of such a catastrophe. The fact that city workers, adult volunteers and government agencies performed so nobly and well only adds lustre to the contributions made by the youth of Tooele who certainly rank at the very top in giving freely of their time. It mattered not the time of day or night, they responded wholeheartedly and their efforts far exceeded any and all expectations. We offer a sincere thank you to Tooeles youth and hope that they will always have the determination to accomplish the things they desire. Certainly, they are deserving of the praise and thanks of the entire community. Their efforts have not been wasted. Tooele is deeply grateful to have our young people expending their energy so useful and unselfishly. We salute you. n GREAT SALT LAKE STATE PARK - a r I !' roads collapse.
