Show history of joshua n reuben clarl clark N JOSHUA REUBEN CLARK joshua reuben clark was bom born december 11 1840 at navarre west canton stark county ohio he was the seventh and youngest child of hendricks and esther rinker clark he ile was the only child to grow to maturity marry and have posterity john clark his paternal second great grandfather was bom born about 1717 near eleanere county antrim ireland his son william was born in ireland august 3 1745 and em migrated to america before the re ary war settling in hamp shire county virginia he was a farmer and owned several hundred acres of land he joined the col omits and fought in the patriot army at one time he was capter ed by the indians and held oner for three months he lived to be an aged man and died in the old dominion his wife ann was born in new jersey in 1755 their fourth son hendricks clark was born january near romney hampshire county va now west virginia he was a farmer and miller in 1835 he set tied in stark county ohio whery he lie lived until 1844 then he moved to elkhart prairie indiana and in 1849 1949 to st joseph county indiana wl ere he bought acres of land lie ile died at the age of 64 on sep 30 1857 and was buried on his farm near bloomer school 10 miles west of south bend in diana hendricks gave a plot of ground to the village to build the school house on wh ch was built the bloomer school he reserved a piece of ground near for his family burial place and several of his family were buried there in 1925 when this place was visited by some of his descendants there was no sign of a burial ground but instead all of the ground roundabout was cultivated and wheat growing there hendricks first wife was mary bailey balley she had five children she died in 1829 mr clark later mar ned ried esther rinker daughter of john and molly rinker who was born sept 12 1789 they had sev en children the rinker family was of pennsylvania german on orl gin and this branch was settled near winchester in 1770 both hendricks and esther clark were worthy members of the german baptist or dunkard church and he was a preacher in that faith for many years she died november 24 1874 she was a widow 17 years joshua s father hendricks was raised in virginia and being a farmer the fertile soil of the west tempted him and he moved west in 1853 to stark county ohio where he owned 80 acres of land and resided there until 1844 when joshua was four years 0 old I 1 d his family moved to elkhart indiana joshua had a fairly good education the best the was to be had in a new farming community his father was very strict with his boys he said yon cant can t mix your play and your work when you mix them you spoil both play and work however he always gave the boys saturday afternoons off and they could do anything they desired usually he said they could their horses down to a lake aboa three miles from their home and swim their horses in the lake having races and a good deal of fun this swimming of his horse came in handy to him when he came west and had to cross rivers and large streams As a boy he worked in the large corn fields which grew so high he would have to reach up to pick the ears of c corn orn on november 14 1861 joshua volunteered for service in the alv il war he was assigned to co B regiment of the indiana vol and was first stationed at camp elliss he ile stayed three months he was then transferred to cano illinois and then to fort anderson paducah kentucky while here he contracted the mumps and was very ill when he was some better he was trans berred to a camp on the tennessee river but his health was s so 0 poor they moved him back to paducah and he was subsequently di ed from the army because of ill health he stated that the sanitary conditions and food in the camps were terrible after being discharged he went up to minnesota and spent two years trapping and fighting the indians their route took them west ward through wyoming to fort bridger arriving there sept 2 1864 he stayed at fort brider the winter and took a contract to put up hay which he cut with a scythe and hauled in wagons with mule team 40 miles he left bridger may 10 1865 for salt lake city traveling the miles by vy mule he ile arrived in salt lake city on may 22 1865 the next day left by wagon freight train virginia city montana a 0 of f miles nad arrived there june 10 1865 he stayed in mon tana that summer and working in the mines and did ild a lot of panning gold while montana joshua added reuben Ms name because hest he state atez were so many J clarks that we I 1 were always getting our mail m mix d up so I 1 added reuben to my name in the spring he came back to utah traveling horse back on the way to salt lake he stopped at farmington and went to church in th the I 1 atle meeting houses where the L D S primary association was first organized and heard his first sermon on mormonism this was sunday march 10 1867 he was greatly impressed brother hess and brother hollis I 1 in the afternoon and brother ste bhenson preached in the evening services joshua stated that on entering ent enns the I 1 atle church he felt this is what I 1 have been seeking an and d when he heard the sermon he thought the I 1 atter day saints have the true gisnet A anth later in salt lake city in april 14 1867 he was baptized by isaac laney and conf amed th saml evening in the tenth wa I 1 by adam spiers and a few weeks I 1 iter ordained a teacher bv by brother booth and elder J T D me all ister in fc he was sent to breet some mormon em grants from eu rope and ass st them in their jour ney to salt lake C ty tv the next winter he worked for arams so ers for board and lodging and a 4 t tie tle money the following winter he hie taught school in the tenth ward then he applied for a school in grantsville Grants ville in the fall of 1868 ila h came to grantsville Grants ville to teach school his first school had 29 stu dents he boarded this first win ter r with samuel wooley he taught school in grantsville Grants ville for five y years ears during that he became ac quain quainter ted with the sister of sam uel wooley mary louise whom he married july 11 1870 their first home was a one room log house by the side of samuels home the following sur summer niner they built the rock house about a mile north of samuel wooley s on a piece of land her father had home steadied they moved into the house in the fall and their first child J 3 reuben jr was born born there they lived there two years when reuben was a few hs old joshua went east and brought back his mother and two brothers others to Hendre hendrecks iks and martin he built two lumber rooms on the north of their home for his mother and brothe s martin had not been very well for some time as he had tuber culos e they had been here just a few months when martin died nov 8 1872 not long after his mother and arid brother hendricks went back to indiana as her sister s husband died and the mother thought was needed at her daughter daughters s home from the rock house they moved closer into town and lived in bro ther burton burtons s house where thir second son edwin was born they thy were very crowded in the one room so they moved to the brick nou e on the street above where ein eln er was born they lived here just ju st a short time and moved to broiler severe s home at present residence of golden stromberg 1946 they I 1 ved in the severe house five years and esther frank and alice were born in that house then they bought the farm located three miles to the extreme southeast of grantsville Grants ville samuel lucille john and gordon were born there they added three adobe rooms to th little three room house which had two log and one lumber room aft er living on the farm for sixteen years they sold it and bought the mcbride house john clark b property on west clark street they tore down the mcbride house using the old adobes to line the new house and made new adobes for the outside while they babilt the he house they used a little lean to for their kitchen and slept out under the big walnut trees awo days before christmas they moved into their new house which sure ly seemed good after living out doors all summer and late fall when gordon was a year and a half old in 1895 joshua was cal led to fill a mission in the north ern states edwin worked the farm with the help of the younger bro J reuben jr was attending school in salt lake and lived with his aunt rachel he worked part time and sent what money he could to his father joshua was in the mission field but a short time when he was appointed to be mis sion president he was privileged to come home at conference times while he was away mary louise was quite sick but she insisted that he stay in the mission field until his time was up he stayed two years he was a very active man all his life both in civic and church affairs he was postmaster for grantsville Grants ville for twenty one years yeara he ile was assessor and tax collector for tooele thoele county for one term and superintendent of grantsville Grants ville co op store for six years and secre tary for many public committees at different times he was senior president of the quorum of seventies for twenty one years on the of may 1913 he was 0 bained patriarch for tooele thoele stake ba b francis M lyman he was a very kind loving and sincere man and loved children dearly he always had a little funny story for them he had a wonderful sense of humor it is said that he was the ideal boys man understanding and loving to all who came in contact with him he was quite tall over six feet in height and weighed pounds during the prime of his life he was medium dark complexion ed with blue eyes his ills hair was very fine and silky and he never went bald at all he always wore ware a beard which was long and white during his late years joshua with his wife mary lou isa lived a long and happy busy useful life together they cel ehrat e el I 1 their golden wedding ji IL 1 11 1920 with their seven living child ren and their great posterity and many friends three children pre ced ceded d them in death elner elmer hav ing died june 14 joshua and his wife were brivil eged to go east to visit J auben hen he lived in washington D C and arid while there visited new nen lork ork and all the sight sights of intern in the eastern cities joshua reuben dark clark died near ly nine years before his wafe he died in grantsville Grants ville july 23 25 1929 at the age of 89 years and was buried in th the e grantsville Grants ville cemetery
